class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            The ritual of signing a recording contract was once the aspiring pop star\u2019s ultimate dream. Kesha, who turned 37 this year, signed hers at 18 with the RCA imprint Kemosabe Records. But what followed was almost 10 years of litigation, including a high-profile legal battle (which doesn\u2019t need to be rehashed here) in which Kesha fought to regain sovereignty over her own voice. Though she was initially denied release from her contract, a confidential settlement was reached in 2023, and on March 6, 2024, she had secured full legal rights back to everything she\u2019d lost at 18. \u201cIt gave me a vision of everything about the music business that needs to change,\u201d she says of that day in a recent video call. Most importantly, she was finally free.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            Kesha expresses that sentiment over and over during our interview, speaking to The FADER just before a tour rehearsal, always coming back to that central point: \u201cI am a free bitch.\u201d On July 4, she will release <i>Period<\/i> \u2014 a truly ballistic, freeing record filled with abrupt genre-swerves and polka-inspired accordion \u2014 her first release on her own terms under her own imprint: Kesha Records.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-272113\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            \u201cThe last time you guys heard an album from me, I was preparing for trial,\u201d she adds, referring to her 2023 project <i>Gag Order<\/i>. \u201cNow, absolutely everything is different. I feel like the color has come back into my life.\u201d She\u2019s started dancing again. She\u2019s started singing at home again. She begins most mornings doing both alongside her collection of Italo Disco records. Not long ago, she couldn\u2019t even listen to music \u2014 \u201cthe love of my life that I\u2019d sacrificed everything for, it was such a source of pain.\u201d It was particularly hard to listen to her own music. She felt isolated, she says, sad, and \u201cforgotten by the world that I just became really insular.\u201d All music represented what she didn\u2019t have the freedom to do.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            After March 6, 2024, she began poring through her discography for the first time in years, some of which she hasn\u2019t been able to face in over a decade. \u201cListening back made me so proud of my younger self, the girl who was still fighting for people to feel loved and seen and accepted,\u201d she says. \u201cSo I\u2019ve decided I\u2019m spiritually and energetically taking my fucking songs back. The Movie<\/i>, Kesha first came to prominence as the uncredited vocalist in Flo Rida\u2019s 2009 hit \u201cRight Round.\u201d Seven months later, her song \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iP6XpLQM2Cs&amp;list=RDiP6XpLQM2Cs&amp;start_radio=1\">TiK ToK<\/a>\u201d became the first mega\u2011hit of the decade, holding the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/kesha-tik-tok-this-week-in-billboard-chart-history-2010-2\/\">No. 1<\/a> spot on the Billboard Hot 100 so firmly that not even Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie\u2019s 25th anniversary remake of \u201cWe Are the World\u201d could unseat it. (It would turn out that only the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/black-eyed-peas-imma-be-knocks-kehas-tik-tok-out-of-hot-100-number-one-105955\/\">Black Eyed Peas<\/a> would have that power.)\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Borrowing her hilariously unearned bravado from the likes of Uffie and Peaches, Kesha was gentrified electropop\u2019s answer to falling-up-the-stairs Jennifer Lawrence. She staggered through fame, exposing its rigidity through her own unpolished performance of it \u2014 a screwball heroine for the im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te post\u2011Britney age.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            In early press, she gleefully spoke about pissing, shitting, and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.music-news.com\/news\/UK\/41226\/Kesha-wears-her-own-placenta-to-improve-her-psychic-abilities\">placentas<\/a>. Today, she\u2019s mellowed. She might drop the occasional \u201cfuck,\u201d but that\u2019s as brash as she gets. She sings this way on <i>Period<\/i>, too. There are glints of brazen, dollar-sign Ke$ha, but she mostly delivers her lyrics with an unshaken purr, as if soothing you through a bad mushroom <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>. While on \u201cTiK ToK,\u201d she insisted that the party wouldn\u2019t start until she walked in, on \u201cJOYRIDE.,\u201d this album\u2019s lead single, she sings: \u201cThis party sucks. I\u2019m about to ditch.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-272116\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left embed\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Kesha - JOYRIDE. She still wants to make people dance, act a fucking fool, get real stupid with it. \u201cWhen there\u2019s a recession and times can be hard, dancing is free. I want to make people dance,\u201d she told <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/keha-talks-about-puking-in-paris-hiltons-closet-breaking-into-princes-house-2010201\/#:~:text=It's%20not%20pretentious%2C%20it's%20not,want%20to%20make%20people%20dance.\">US Weekly<\/a> in 2010. Now that she\u2019s truly free, she says wants to reclaim the Kesha that first walked into the party.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            She had tried this with 2020\u2019s <i>High Road<\/i>, but that album hit a wall immediately on release. It was the pandemic; there was no tour, or little way to respond to the work. In Pitchfork\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/reviews\/albums\/kesha-high-road\/\">review<\/a> of the album, they described <i>High Road<\/i> as \u201csomeone trying to portray freedom and free-spiritedness\u2014even a recovered sense of identity\u2014who isn\u2019t quite there yet.\u201d Kesha admits she agrees. \n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-272117\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>\u201cI\u2019ve decided I\u2019m spiritually and energetically taking my fucking songs back. They\u2019re my fucking songs.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-272119\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            \u201c<i>High Road<\/i> was a complicated process behind the scenes,\u201d she says. \u201cBecause I really wanted to stand for joy, and I really wanted to make people dance, and I wanted to be playful and I wanted to be the thing that everyone knows and loves me for, but I wasn&#8217;t free. Artists like <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/music-news\/lorde-charli-xcx-brat-inspired-new-album-virgin-1235959865\/\">Lorde<\/a> say it has made them more ambitious. Kesha echoes something similar: \u201cCharli\u2019s always been ahead of the curve; it\u2019s been really inspiring,\u201d she says. Kesha\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earance on Charli\u2019s \u201cSpring Breakers\u201d remix last year reminded her that pop shouldn\u2019t be a competition. \u201cGrowing up in this era of music, the people around me would try to compare me to other people. So, I couldn&#8217;t help but feel that I was in competition with people that I was a fan of, and it was a really confusing place to be.\u201d She brings the point back to her freedom: \u201cBut, you know, through my process of gaining my freedom and really looking at my patterns of thinking that keep me from feeling free, I realize that the only competition is with myself.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            The world seems very ready for this reduxed Kesha. At a time when popstars are returning to the gonzo sounds of the 2010s and people are eagerly identifying so-called \u201crecession indicators,\u201d Kesha once again fits squarely in the cultural moment. She is performing with some of the best stats of her career. As of writing, she\u2019s Spotify\u2019s 64th most listened-to artist in the world, a number that\u2019s been climbing all week. She achieved her second-highest days of streaming in mid-June. She\u2019s headlining New York City\u2019s Madison Square Garden for the first time in July.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            A successful \u2014 here comes the refrain again \u2014 free bitch, Kesha\u2019s even exploring the possibility of finally releasing the long-lost <i>Lipsha<\/i> album with the Flaming Lips. The project, which originated from Wayne Coyne\u2019s early belief in her talent, has become the white whale of Kesha\u2019s fan lore. She\u2019s currently looking into whether she can finally release <i>Lipsha<\/i> on Kesha Records, \u201cbut I\u2019m not sure what I legally can do,\u201d she says.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-272123\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>\u201cI really wanted to stand for joy, and I really wanted to make people dance, and I wanted to be playful and I wanted to be the thing that everyone knows and loves me for, but I wasn\u2019t free. I was really lonely.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-272124\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            One of the first releases on Kesha Records, other than her own album, is her mother Pebe Sebert\u2019s shelved \u201880s album. \u201cShe\u2019s told me many, many personal stories about the ways she\u2019s been overlooked, how her album never came out, even though she made it almost fifty years ago,\u201d she says. \u201cI know that pain; it\u2019s now in my bloodline and my lineage.\u201d Kesha says she\u2019s using Kesha Records to not only free herself but help heal her family too. \u201cI want to give my mom her version of freedom, which is just to allow people to hear the music she worked so hard on.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            She uses this as an opportunity to segue into the app she\u2019s working on: <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/kesha-smash\/\">SMASH<\/a>. Per an official press release, \u201cSMASH aims to give music creators access to the professional community they need to make amazing music, without having to sign away their lives to get into the club.\u201d The app, Kesha says, will become a place where artists can collaborate and connect without having to be conversant in the business and legal jargon that dominates the music business. She says that she sees the opportunity as a way to help \u201cright the wrongs\u201d that she\u2019s personally seen while being in the business. She\u2019s been immersing herself in the tech world for the past couple of years, building the app alongside Alan Cannistraro, the man responsible for developing the very first iPhone app, as well as creating Facebook\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/rheo-apple-tv\">AutoPlay<\/a> video feature.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Knowing that the tech industry has historically taken advantage of an ailing music industry while only devaluing it further \u2014 like Spotify or AI music app Suno \u2014 and that Kesha just extricated herself from an industry system that left her feeling exploited and taken advantage of for decades, I ask her if she has faith that the tech industry is any better. \u201cI do,\u201d she says, a little hesitantly, \u201cwhich is maybe, um, a little na\u00efve.\u201d She immediately corrects herself: \u201cI have hope, but my eyes are wide open.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-272138\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left embed\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Kesha - DELUSIONAL.\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JNUg34FjRvI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-272125\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Last November, she came under some heat for <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/kesha-delusional-song-artwork-change-ai-controversy-1235343960\/\">using AI<\/a> to produce the artwork for single \u201cDelusional,\u201d which featured a pile of Birken bags with the song\u2019s title embroidered onto them (some of the bags misspelled it  as \u2018DELLUSONAL\u2019). Kesha claims the art was a \u201cpolitical statement on AI.\u201d \u201cWhen artists create, they should get paid, and I think it\u2019s <i>delusional<\/i> for artists to keep creating without actually being paid.\u201d She emphasizes that the backlash was a case of her intentions not coming across. In May, she changed the cover to a photo of her gagged and strapped to a chair. \u201cAt the end of the day, I decided that living in my own integrity and what I believe was more important than trying to prove a point.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            Kesha is keeping her eyes open and focused on making art that feels true to her. \u201cI&#8217;ve been doing this for so long now, and there are parts of that journey that people know, and there are parts that nobody will ever know. So now my dream is to look into the business as a whole and see how I can be additive to healing that space.\u201d The future became a possibility again on March 6, 2024.
