\n President Trump continued to slam reports that he bashed America\u2019s war dead as \u201closers\u201d and \u201csuckers\u201d saying: \u201cI never made those statements\u201d during an ABC News town hall on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

An audience member at the event in Philadelphia asked the president how he \u201cexpects to win back the support\u201d of the military and families following the story published by The Atlantic earlier this month.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s easy, because I never made those statements. They were never made by me,\u201d Trump replied.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cThe statements never happ<\/a>ened, they were lies\u2026 They made up this quote.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Atlantic claimed Trump referred to Marines killed in World War I and buried in a cemetery outside Paris as \u201closers\u201d and said the 1,800 Marines who died in the Battle of Belleau Wood were \u201csuckers\u201d for getting killed.<\/p>\n

Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg, who wrote the piece, said it was based on information from four unidentified sources \u201cwith firsthand knowledge\u201d of Trump\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n

Trump has previously denied the claims, calling The Atlantic a \u201cdying\u201d magazine that concocted a \u201cfake story in order to gain some relevance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several US officials have defended the president, including Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert Wilkie,\u00a0former national security adviser\u00a0John Bolton\u00a0and\u00a0Zach Fuentes,\u00a0a top aide to former White House chief of staff John Kelly.<\/p>\n

Asked about his previous comments bashing late Sen. John McCain, Trump responded that \u201cI was never a fan of John McCain.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added about McCain \u2014 a Navy veteran who was captured and tortured during the Vietnam War \u2014 that: \u201cI never thought he treated our vets well.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe didn\u2019t do the job. I was never a fan of his. But \u2014 and I think that\u2019s fine and everybody knows that, and I said it to his face. I was very much up in that.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
