This tells your internet service provider that you love TechCrunch and want to see this newsletter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before we jump into the rest of the news, a word about <strong>Grok<\/strong>, the AI model created by <strong>xAI<\/strong>, an <strong>Elon Musk <\/strong>company that recently acquired his <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> service X. Yes, this is related to transportation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grok, which can analyze images and respond to questions, is meant to be a competitor to models like OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT. Grok has become a centerpiece of X, where users interact with the AI chatbot. It\u2019s also become increasingly combative and gone on several antisemitic tirades, praised Hitler, and even made rape threats. (Those posts have been taken down.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And just yesterday, AI reporter Max Zeff discovered that xAI\u2019s newest model, Grok 4, seems to consult social media posts from Musk\u2019s X account when answering questions about the Israel and Palestine conflict, abortion, immigration laws, and other controversial issues.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How is any of this related to transportation? Grok is coming to Tesla vehicles as soon as next week, according to Musk.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A well-known white hat hacker who uses the handle <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/greentheonly\/status\/1939887223416951193\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u201cGreen the Only\u201d<\/a> dug into Tesla\u2019s firmware and made a few discoveries. For example, drivers will be able to choose certain Grok \u201cpersonalities,\u201d including ones that are NSFW (not safe for work), argumentative, kids story, sexy, therapist, unhinged, and more. We will update this regularly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finnish e-motor startup <strong>Donut Lab<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/exclusive-finnish-startup-donut-raises-e25m-ev\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">raised \u20ac25 million<\/a> ($29.2 million) in a seed funding round led by Risto Siilasmaa, the founder of cybersecurity company WithSecure (formerly F-Secure). Risto has also joined Donut Lab\u2019s board.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>INSHUR<\/strong>, an insurance products service focused on the on-demand economy, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/inshurgroup.com\/news\/inshur-secures-35-million-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">raised $35 million<\/a> from Trinity Capital. Morrison has a history of tussling with Tesla.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, it looks like <strong>Tesla <\/strong>is trying to spread its robotaxi wings. The company applied to test and operate autonomous vehicles in Arizona in a bid to bring its fledgling robotaxi service to the Metro Phoenix area. Our story has a few interesting tidbits and explains the AV permitting process in Phoenix. One critical point: The company will also need a TNC permit to provide ride-hailing services.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Musk<\/strong> also commented that robotaxis will come to the Bay Area once they receive regulatory approval in \u201ca month or two.\u201d There\u2019s just one issue with that: The California DMV, which regulates AVs, says Tesla hasn\u2019t even applied for a driverless testing or deployment permit yet. As of today, Tesla only has an autonomous vehicle testing permit for public road testing with a safety driver, which it\u2019s held since 2014.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Waymo<\/strong> continues to expand, and not just geographically. The company is opening up its robotaxi service in Phoenix to teenagers. There are caveats here, namely that the teens can only sign up through a verified parent\u2019s account. And they have to be ages 14 to 17, so no 13-year-olds. That suggests Waymo wants to steer clear of middle schoolers and only provide service to those in high school.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Waymo is sniffing around <strong>New York City<\/strong> (a famously restrictive place for AVs) and <strong>Philadelphia<\/strong>. The company kicked off \u201croad <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>s\u201d in the two Northeastern cities. Road trips can be viewed as early testing, although in New York City the vehicles will all be manually driven and used to map and collect data.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-electric-vehicles-batteries-amp-charging\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Electric_vehicles_batteries_charging\"><\/span>Electric vehicles, batteries, &amp; charging<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several new EVs broke cover this past week: <strong>Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola K\u00e4llenius<\/strong> took the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=34zBLhrEtu0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">upcoming all-electric GLC<\/a> for a test ride; <strong>Subaru<\/strong> said it will reveal its new all-electric compact crossover SUV at 7:30 p.m. ET on July 17; and <strong>Volvo<\/strong> shared information about the carbon footprint of the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.media.volvocars.com\/global\/en-gb\/media\/pressreleases\/351660\/the-new-volvo-es90-a-big-electric-car-with-a-small-carbon-footprint?utm_campaign=Syndicated_351660&amp;utm_medium=RSS_All%20Press%20Releases&amp;utm_source=media.volvocars.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">all-electric ES90<\/a>, which starts production later this summer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, I spent a few days in the 2026 <strong>Rivian<\/strong> quad-motor R1S and R1T.
