While he was directing <em>Explorers<\/em> (1985), it was given to him by someone clearing out a portion of the Paramount lot that once served as the home of RKO Pictures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cOne of the crew who knew I was a fan of vintage films came to me with a wood prop and said, \u2018They\u2019re throwing out all of this stuff. You might want this,\u2019\u201d Dante <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/intelligentcollector.com\/a-rosebud-by-any-other-name\/\">recalled<\/a> in a recent interview. \u201cI\u2019m not sure he knew what the sled was, but he must have had some inkling, or why else would he have asked me?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI was astonished. Since I am a huge fan of the movie, I said, \u2018Yeah, I\u2019ll be glad to take it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tScientific testing has confirmed its authenticity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve had the honor of protecting this piece of cinematic history for decades,\u201d Dante said in a statement released by Heritage. \u201cTo see Rosebud find a new home \u2014 and make history in the process \u2014 is both surreal and deeply gratifying. It\u2019s a testament to the enduring power of storytelling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAfter the sale of a set of ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in <em>The Wizard of Oz<\/em> (1939) for $32.5 million in December, this is the second most valuable piece of movie memorabilia ever sold, according to Heritage. (The $14.75 million price includes the buyer\u2019s premium; the purchaser was not revealed.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhile he had it, Dante put the sled in <em>Explorers<\/em>, <em>The \u2019Burbs<\/em> (1989), <em>Gremlins 2: The New Batch<\/em> (1990) and an episode of the 1991-93 NBC <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> <em>Eerie, Indiana<\/em> that he directed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tTwo other screen-used sleds from RKO\u2019s <em>Citizen Kane<\/em> \u2014 only a \u201cfew\u201d were produced for the film, the auction house says \u2014 sold to Dante mentor Steven Spielberg for $60,500 in 1982 and to an anonymous buyer for $233,000 in 1996.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe sale of Dante\u2019s sled took place Wednesday during the second day of Heritage\u2019s Entertainment auction, which runs through Friday. Earlier in the day, a painting by Bob Peak that served as original key artwork for <em>Apocalypse Now<\/em> (1979) went for $687,500.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOther items up for sale include inscribed tablets from Cecil B. DeMille\u2019s <em>The Ten Commandments<\/em> (1956), Luke Skywalker\u2019s Red Five X-wing from <em>The Empire Strikes Back<\/em> (1980) and a bullwhip from <em>Indiana Jones and<\/em> <em>The Last Crusade<\/em> (1989).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThis is not just the most important Entertainment event we\u2019ve ever held \u2014 it\u2019s one of the most important in Entertainment auction history,\u201d Heritage executive vp Joe Maddalena said. \u201cThese aren\u2019t just props. They\u2019re mythic objects. They tell the story of Hollywood\u2019s greatest moments, one piece at a time, each tied to a memory, a performance, a legend.
