{"id":680365,"date":"2025-07-17T20:30:21","date_gmt":"2025-07-17T17:30:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/one-third-of-young-workers-cheated-by-employers-study\/"},"modified":"2025-07-17T20:30:21","modified_gmt":"2025-07-17T17:30:21","slug":"one-third-of-young-workers-cheated-by-employers-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/one-third-of-young-workers-cheated-by-employers-study\/","title":{"rendered":"One-third of young workers cheated by employers: Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div class=\"article-gallery lightGallery\">\n<div data-thumb=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/tmb\/2024\/young-worker.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/scx2.b-cdn.net\/gfx\/news\/hires\/2024\/young-worker.jpg\" data-sub-html=\"Credit: Andrea Piacquadio from Pexels\">\n<figure class=\"article-img\">\n            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/800a\/2024\/young-worker.jpg\" alt=\"young worker\" title=\"Credit: Andrea Piacquadio from Pexels\" width=\"800\" height=\"530\"\/><figcaption class=\"text-darken text-low-up text-truncate-js text-truncate mt-3\">\n                Credit: Andrea Piacquadio from Pexels<br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>More than one in three young people have experienced being ripped off by employers, and most of them did not seek redress, according to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/law.unimelb.edu.au\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0007\/5331517\/Fair-Days-Work-Report_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">a new study from Melbourne Law School<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The survey of 2814 workers under 30 found that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>33% had been paid $15 per hour or less (the current federal minimum wage is $24.95 per hour)<\/li>\n<li>17.9% had not been paid for all work completed<\/li>\n<li>9.5% had been given food or products instead of being paid in money<\/li>\n<li>8% had been forced to return some or all of their pay to employer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;Wage exploitation is rife among employers who hire young people,&#8221; study lead Professor John Howe said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Young people don&#8217;t have much industrial knowledge or experience, so are easy to take advantage of. They are also unlikely to challenge an employer, as many of them are in insecure work and they worry about losing their jobs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His research, part of the Fair Day&#8217;s Work project at Melbourne Law School, found that there were many other ways in which employers exploited young staff:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>60% had had to pay for work-related items or activities, such as uniforms, protective equipment, training or car fuel<\/li>\n<li>36% had been forbidden to take entitled breaks<\/li>\n<li>34% were not paid for work during a trial period<\/li>\n<li>24% had not been paid compulsory super<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;It was also reported that employers often cooked the books, presumably to avoid fair wage rates and the Tax Office,&#8221; Professor Howe said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Twenty-one percent of the young people said they were sometimes paid off the books, and 12% were always paid off the books. Eight percent never even received a pay slip.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Only a third had gone to unions or agencies, such as the Fair Work Ombudsman, for help.<\/p>\n<p>The Fair Days Work project investigates how data <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> could be used to improve employer compliance with the law.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Federal Government recently made intentional underpayment of workers a criminal offense and named it for what it is, wage theft,&#8221; Professor Howe said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We call on the Federal Government to increase funding for compliance.
