It\u2019s the latest company heading to the far north to tap into abundant green energy and natural cooling for power-hungry data centres.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The facility will be located in the Norwegian coastal town of Narvik, which lies 220km within the Arctic Circle. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aker\u2019s president and CEO, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00d8yvind Eriksen<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said that the site already had access to 230MW of power and was ready for construction to commence. Eriksen said the AI facility in Narvik would represent an opportunity to \u201center a new value chain early.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bits_meet_blizzards\"><\/span><b>Bits meet blizzards<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nordic region is fast becoming a global hotspot for AI data infrastructure. Last year, Google committed another \u20ac1bn to its Hamina campus in southern Finland, marking its seventh expansion. The data centre upgrade aims to support surging demand for AI compute while t<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ing into the region\u2019s large supplies of renewable energy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not far away, Amsterdam-based Nebius announced in October that it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>ling GPU capacity at its M\u00e4nts\u00e4l\u00e4 site in Sweden, where it aims to run 60,000 GPUs for AI applications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also in Sweden, Microsoft bet $3.2bn (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u20ac2.7bn)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to boost its cloud and AI capacity across its three data centres in the country last year. The tech giant is also reportedly developing a <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/nordics-efficient-energy-infrastructure-ideal-microsofts-data-centre-expansion-2025-03-07\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dozen new sites in Finland<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under its \u201cpower-first\u201d strategy, aimed at meeting massive AI compute demands while pushing toward its carbon-negative goals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big Tech aside, the Nordics are also sprouting their own homegrown AI players, including the likes of Finland\u2019s Silo AI, which was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bought by chipmaker AMD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a $665mn (571mn) deal in October. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Aker now hopping on the AI bandwagon, the region\u2019s remote edges could be turning into ground zero for Europe\u2019s next tech race. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
