\n\tWhen filmmaker Jason Reitman set out to make Ghostbusters: Afterlife<\/em> in 2020, he ran into a problem: Many of the original props his dad, Ivan, had used to make the 1984 film \u2014 flight suits, proton packs, even the iconic Ecto-1 \u2014 had deteriorated after decades in storage.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe were doing this archaeological dig into, \u2018OK, how do we still make a Ghostbusters<\/em> film?\u2019 \u201d recalls Reitman. \u201cThere were pieces that were no longer available.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe solution came from an unlikely place. Over the years, Ghostbusters<\/em> fan groups around the world had perfected the art of re-creating props for cosplay. The production ended up consulting some of these fans and adopting their DIY techniques to help restore the gear.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut Reitman soon discovered these groups were doing more than just playing dress-up.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThey were not simply cosplaying for Comic-Con but rather were doing this for charity,\u201d he says. \u201cThey were visiting children\u2019s hospitals. They were raising money for good causes as Ghostbusters.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFive years later, Reitman has joined their ranks. He now regularly suits up for charity events. In July, he visited four Los Angeles firehouses to honor first responders \u2014 especially poignant after January\u2019s devastating wildfires in Altadena and Pacific Palisades.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou have these real heroes on fire trucks, and then we show up in the Ecto-1 and they light up,\u201d says Reitman. \u201cAnd all you can think is, \u2018Guys, you\u2019re the ones doing the real work here.\u2019 But it just shows there\u2019s a way that movies<\/a> light us up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tToday, there are 204 Ghostbusters<\/em> fan groups throughout the U.S., with more around the world. Collectively, they\u2019ve raised about $250,000 in the past year for causes ranging from children\u2019s hospitals to LGBTQ+ shelters, wildfire relief and cancer research.<\/p>\n

\n\tSony, which owns the franchise, has thrown its weight behind the movement. The studio pledged this year to match up to $150,000 in funds raised by fan groups, and through Ghost Corps \u2014 the Sony-owned division run by Reitman and Dan Aykroyd \u2014 has donated toys and signed memorabilia for charity auctions. It even added a leaderboard to the official Ghostbusters<\/em> website to rank which groups are raising the\u00a0most money.<\/p>\n

\n\tAmong the volunteers Reitman has befriended is Matt Zunich, who co-founded L.A. Ghostbusters in 2021. His group works closely with the nonprofit Starlight Children\u2019s Foundation to raise money for Ghostbusters<\/em>-theme<\/a>d hospital gowns for kids.<\/p>\n

\n\tDressed in full gear, they deliver the gowns in person. Zunich recalls visiting a 12-year-old Ghostbusters<\/em> superfan at Miller Children\u2019s and Women\u2019s Hospital in Long Beach last year. As they were leaving, he saw the girl \u2014 now suited up in her new gown \u2014 holding a nurse\u2019s hand as she headed to her next appointment with a little spring in her\u00a0step.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cShe was more positive. She was more engaged. She was ready to take on the next challenge,\u201d Zunich says. \u201cAs someone who has been hospitalized as a kid, it sucks. And being able to give them the reprieve that I never had meant an awful lot to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs for Reitman, he says that at the end of the day, it\u2019s the costume that does the heavy lifting. Whether kids are seeing real stars like Bill Murray or Mckenna Grace, or just someone from a fan club, the effect is the same.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThey feel like they\u2019re getting to meet a Ghostbuster,\u201d he says. That\u2019s what\u2019s exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n
