And Argentines can&#8217;t get enough of it.<\/p>\n<p>The Argentine-American scientific mission is for the first time exploring the Mar del Plata canyon, a submarine gorge which plunges nearly 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) deep, off the coast of the seaside resort of the same name.<\/p>\n<p>The awed conversations between scientists leading the expedition and the explanations they give to viewers allow the public a rare insight into the hidden wonders of marine biology.<\/p>\n<p>In one instance, the camera on the SuBastian underwater robot shows a weird-looking, little white animal. How can that be? At a depth of 3,000 meters!&#8221; Pablo Penchaszadeh, a marine biologist and painter who is on board the expedition as an artist, told AFP.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-gallery lightGallery\">\n<div data-thumb=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/tmb\/2025\/scientists-operate-a-r.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/scx2.b-cdn.net\/gfx\/news\/2025\/scientists-operate-a-r.jpg\" data-sub-html=\"Scientists operate a robot to collect biological samples from the seafloor.\">\n<figure class=\"article-img text-center\">\n            <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/800a\/2025\/scientists-operate-a-r.jpg\" alt=\"Scientists operate a robot to collect biological samples from the seafloor\" title=\"Scientists operate a robot to collect biological samples from the seafloor.\"\/><figcaption class=\"text-left text-darken text-truncate text-low-up mt-3\">\n                Scientists operate a robot to collect biological samples from the seafloor.<br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Patrick_Star\"><\/span>Patrick Star<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The 20-day expedition &#8220;Underwater Oases of the Mar del Plata Canyon&#8221; involves 25 scientists\u2014most of them from the Argentine research agency CONICET.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the GEMPA deep sea study group, with support from the US Schmidt Ocean Institute, it will end on August 10.<\/p>\n<p>Aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute&#8217;s &#8220;Falkor (too)&#8221; ship, scientists remotely operate the robot, which can descend to a depth of 4,500 meters (14,700 feet).<\/p>\n<p>They collect biological samples with its robotic arms and other instruments, and send back high-definition images.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The fact that anyone can connect from home and see what we are seeing live is a unique opportunity,&#8221; explains expedition leader Daniel Lauretta in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a> is no longer something distant or inaccessible, but becomes part of everyday life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This week, social media users were delighted when an orange starfish with two symmetrical bumps resembling buttocks <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eared on the live stream. It quickly prompted comparisons with Patrick Star, from the popular animated <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; marine biology became a trending topic on social media, and the broadcast reached the screens of hundreds of thousands of captivated viewers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I came to see the big-bottomed star, is it here?&#8221; said Lauretta.<\/p>\n<p>But funding for such expeditions is under threat in Argentina.<\/p>\n<p>CONICET, the government&#8217;s scientific research arm, has been severely underfunded by libertarian President Javier Milei, who has implemented draconian cuts to public spending with his infamous &#8220;chainsaw.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Its budget fell by 21% last year, salaries have plummeted by 35% since the Milei took office in December 2023, and the cuts have led to an exodus of scientists.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, in between &#8220;oohs&#8221;
