“#De Blasio unsure normal life in NYC will return next summer<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Mayor Bill de Blasio said Wednesday that he can\u2019t assure New Yorkers that the coronavirus-ravaged Big App<\/a>le will be \u201cback to normal\u201d \u2014 even by next summer.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy hope is you\u2019ll see a vaccine by spring and it is distributed and people are vaccinated by a late point in the spring, hopefully the latest, maybe even sooner,\u201d de Blasio said during a conference call with reporters.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then that season when you see a lot of the big events in the summer that we will be back to normal,\u201d said Hizzoner, explaining, \u201cThat\u2019s my hope, but I don\u2019t want to assure anything until we get a lot closer.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Blasio made the comments while responding to a reporter\u2019s question about whether street fairs will come back to the city next year.<\/p>\n

Street fairs and parades alike in the Big Apple were nixed after the coronavirus crisis plagued the city back in March.<\/p>\n

The mayor said he wants street fair organizers \u201cto understand like all the folks who have the great events in this city \u2014 our goal is to see them back next summer.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Blasio has repeatedly said that the reopening of the city is based on science<\/a> and data.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can say this \u2014 what we\u2019ve learned from this whole crisis is to make decisions based on the data and the science,\u201d the mayor said. \u201cThat\u2019s going to be what determines everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

COVID-19 has so far killed more than 23,000 city residents \u2014 confirmed and probable \u2014 and sickened more than 230,000 across the five boroughs.<\/p>\n

But the positivity infection rate in the Big Apple has consistently remained low for weeks.<\/p>\n

According to the latest city data, the percentage of those testing positive for the bug citywide is 0.87 percent.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything is going to be decided based on the data and the science and health and safety first,\u201d de Blasio said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
