The Movie: <\/strong>Zodiac<\/i><\/p>\n

The Pitch:\u00a0<\/strong>David Fincher\u2019s obsessive portrait of obsession,\u00a0Zodiac<\/em> follows three different people \u2013 a detective, a journalist, and a political cartoonist \u2013 as they become mired in the hunt for the Zodiac Killer.<\/p>\n

Why It\u2019s Essential Quarantine Viewing:<\/strong>\u00a0Zodiac<\/em> is a long movie \u2013 157 minutes \u2013 but in the words of Roger Ebert, \u201cBad movies are always too long, but good movies are either too short, or just right.\u201d Zodiac<\/em> is a\u00a0great<\/em> movie, which means its big runtime never overstays its welcome. In fact, you\u2019ll come away from this epic probably hungry for more.<\/p>\n

David Fincher<\/strong> knows how to make serial killers entertaining. After the mishap of\u00a0Alien 3<\/em>, his career recovered \u2013 and bloomed \u2013 thanks to\u00a0Seven<\/em>. And he also had a hand in Netflix\u2019s fantastic serial killer series\u00a0Mindhunter<\/em>. But the best work in Fincher\u2019s multiple murder filmography is\u00a0Zodiac<\/em><\/strong>, a full-blown masterpiece. This isn\u2019t your traditional serial killer flick. Instead, it\u2019s more like\u00a0All the President\u2019s Men<\/em>. It\u2019s not about the murders \u2013 not really. It\u2019s about the investigation. It\u2019s about the hunt.<\/p>\n

The first act of the film is devoted to the killer\u2019s crimes throughout California. But then, the killings stop \u2013 and they don\u2019t start up again. And yet there\u2019s a whole lot of movie left. Fincher covers all of this over a period of years, and that time frame helps make\u00a0Zodiac<\/em> so watchable. The movie never overstays its welcome because it\u2019s constantly shifting.<\/p>\n

And so are its leads. One portion of the film has flighty reporter\u00a0Robert Downey Jr.<\/strong>\u00a0app<\/a>earing to be the main character, with Jake Gyllenhaal<\/strong> appearing to be a supporting presence as a cartoonist at the same news<\/a>paper. Then things change. Enter Mark Ruffalo<\/strong>, playing a detective investigating the murders (along with his partner, played wonderfully by Anthony Edwards<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Ah, but wait! Just when we\u2019ve settled into Ruffalo being our lead, the narrative changes again. Now, suddenly, Gyllenhaal is our main character, as his cartoonist character becomes obsessed with solving a mystery no one else could solve. It\u2019s not easy to keep changing perspectives like this, and\u00a0Zodiac<\/em> could\u2019ve backfired badly. But it doesn\u2019t. Fincher\u2019s direction, James Vanderbilt\u2019s strong script, and the charisma of those three leads keeps the movie alive.<\/p>\n

Fincher is a filmmaker who understands obsession \u2013 he\u2019s obsessive himself, with infamous stories about the many, many, many takes he requires to get shots right. That obsession is the real secret to\u00a0Zodiac<\/em>\u2018s success, because it is, in the end, a film about obsession. Obsession can drive us. Inspire us. Keep us going. It can also destroy us if we\u2019re not careful. As the film\u2019s tagline warns, \u201cThere\u2019s more than one way to lose your life to a killer.\u201d<\/p>\n
