Kennedy Jr. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/press-room\/hhs-winds-down-mrna-development-under-barda.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said this week <\/a>that he\u2019s pulling the plug on nearly $500 million in funding for the development of mRNA vaccines. The 22 projects are managed by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe data show these vaccines fail to protect effectively against upper respiratory infections like COVID and flu,\u201d Kennedy, a longtime vaccine critic, said in a statement. \u201cWe\u2019re shifting that funding toward safer, broader vaccine platforms that remain effective even as viruses mutate.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said this week that he\u2019s pulling the plug on nearly $500 million in funding for the development of mRNA vaccines. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ofid\/article\/11\/3\/ofae051\/7591274\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Several studies have demonstrated<\/a> that mRNA COVID-19 vaccines were over 90% effective at preventing severe illness and death.<\/p>\n<p>Vaccine researchers im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely took issue with the fiscal gutting, calling it a major setback for <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019ve seen a more dangerous decision in public health in my 50 years in the business,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/kennedy-vaccines-mrna-pfizer-moderna-1fb5b9436f2957075064c18a6cbbe3c9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said Mike Osterholm<\/a>, a University of Minnesota expert on infectious diseases and pandemic preparations.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a closer look at how mRNA vaccines work.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_mRNA\"><\/span>What is mRNA?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>All living cells have ribonucleic acid, an essential biological molecule known as RNA.<\/p>\n<p>RNA\u2019s primary role in the body is to make proteins, which are needed for virtually every cellular process, from building and repairing tissues to defending the body from bacteria and viruses and transporting nutrients and oxygen.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by Pfizer and Biontec is administered during a clinical trial. <span class=\"credit\">EPA\/Biontech SE\/Handout<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Proteins are synthesized using three main types of RNA \u2014 messenger RNA (mRNA), transfer RNA (tRNA) and ribosomal RNA (rRNA).<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>MRNA\u2019s job is to carry information for protein making from DNA to the cell\u2019s ribosomes, where it\u2019s translated into proteins.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_do_mRNA_vaccines_work\"><\/span>How do mRNA vaccines work?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>MRNA can be created in a laboratory and injected into the body to instruct cells to make a protein associated with a specific virus.<\/p>\n<p>The body recognizes the protein as foreign and produces antibodies to combat it. When the actual virus or pathogen invades the body, the immune system is ready to neutralize it, preventing or reducing the severity of illness.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/publichealth.jhu.edu\/2021\/the-long-history-of-mrna-vaccines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Though mRNA was discovered in the early 1960s<\/a>, the first<strong> <\/strong>mRNA vaccine wasn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roved for human use until 2020.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>German firm BioNTech, Pfizer\u2019s partner on its COVID vaccine, is developing mRNA-based vaccines for cancers at a rapid pace. <span class=\"credit\">Photothek via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Food and Drug Administration authorized Pfizer\u2019s COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use in December 2020 and later granted full approval.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>The vaccine uses mRNA to tell cells to make a harmless piece of the coronavirus\u2019 spike protein.<\/p>\n<p>Moderna\u2019s COVID-19 vaccine was also granted full approval by the FDA.<\/p>\n<p>MRNA vaccines are being explored for the treatment of cancer, food allergies and infectious diseases.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers say that mRNA vaccines can be developed faster than traditional vaccines because they do not require the time-consuming process of growing live virus cultures in a lab.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe theoretical advantage of mRNA-based vaccines lies in their rapid adaptability,\u201d Grant Hansman, senior research fellow at the Institute for Biomedicine and Glycomics at Griffith University in Australia, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/could-we-one-day-get-vaccinated-against-the-gastro-bug-norovirus-heres-where-scientists-are-at-258909\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote this week in the Conversation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey will potentially allow annual updates to match circulating strains.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>University College London Hospital is testing novel cancer immunotherapy that aims to prevent skin cancer from recurring. The mRNA-based technology is for people who have already had high-risk melanomas removed. <span class=\"credit\">PA Images via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/covid\/vaccines\/how-they-work.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes<\/a> that mRNA vaccines do not contain any live viruses or pathogens and do not alter a person\u2019s DNA.<\/p>\n<p>The mRNA molecule eventually breaks down in the body.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/21898-mrna-vaccines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Cleveland Clinic reports<\/a> that the risks of mRNA vaccines include pain or swelling at the injection site, fever, fatigue, headaches, muscle aches and allergic reactions.<\/p>\n<p>In his statement, Kennedy said that mRNA vaccines will be phased out in favor of whole killed virus vaccines, a traditional approach that uses entire pathogens that have been inactivated through heat, radiation or chemicals.<\/p>\n<p>Though it\u2019s a tried-and-true method of immunization, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8502079\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">critics have raised concerns<\/a> that these vaccines produce a weaker immune response than mRNA vaccines and pose manufacturing and logistical challenges.<\/p>\n<p><em>With Post wires<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
