If your page appears in Google but not Bing, for example, it could be cited in ChatGPT responses. And if your content is invisible to Google, you may be invisible to AI.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The experiment.<\/strong> Backlinko created a nonsense SEO term \u2013 NexorbalOptimization \u2013 and published a page about it. The key: only Googlebot was allowed to crawl the page. It had no links to it and didn&#8217;t appear in the sitemap, making the page invisible unless discovered by Google.<\/p>\n<p>Once indexed in Google, the team asked various AI models: <em>What is NexorbalOptimization?<\/em><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Only ChatGPT Plus (with browsing) and Perplexity (surprisingly) returned accurate answers \u2013 quoting Backlinko\u2019s page directly. <\/li>\n<li>Other models (including Claude and ChatGPT free) failed to find or summarize the term.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What does it mean?<\/strong> Backlinko\u2019s test strengthens a growing belief among SEOs that ChatGPT Plus is sourcing data from Google.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>OpenAI\u2019s documentation lists Bing as the default search partner. However, the behavior observed across multiple controlled tests seems to tell a different story.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>No comments from OpenAI, Google.<\/strong> There\u2019s no confirmation of any kind of Google-OpenAI deal. An article declaring SEO dead included this passage about Iyer&#8217;s experiment and the publisher&#8217;s attempts to get a comment from either company: <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Asked about the experiment, OpenAI responded on background, emphasizing its ongoing relationship with Microsoft, suggesting that it used a variety of search providers, but not specifically denying that ChatGPT could be Googling. Informed of Iyer\u2019s findings, Google declined to comment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Supporting evidence. <\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/backlinko.com\/chatgpt-using-google-search\">Backlinko\u2019s findings<\/a> echo separate tests:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Abhishek Iyer: <\/strong>The former Google engineer ran a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/acme.bot\/blog\/chatgpt-web-search-uses-google-search-and-not-bing-search-with-proof\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nearly identical test<\/a>, indexing a hidden page only in Google. ChatGPT Plus found it. The free version of ChatGPT did not \u2014 and no other search engine had access to the page. He also analyzed ChatGPT\u2019s search references and found strong alignment with Google\u2019s domain and snippet data, not Bing\u2019s.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aleyda Solis:<\/strong> The well-known consultant&#8217;s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/en\/ai-search\/chatgpt-uses-google-serp-snippets-for-answers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">test<\/a> observed that ChatGPT responses mirrored Google Search snippets \u2013 down to the wording \u2013 once a page was indexed. In contrast, Gemini accessed the page directly, even before it was indexed by Google. When Bing eventually indexed the page, ChatGPT continued quoting snippets from Google SERPs, not Bing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alexis Rylko:<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/newsletter-alekseo-com.translate.goog\/p\/searchgpt-bing-google?_x_tr_sl=fr&amp;_x_tr_tl=en&amp;_x_tr_hl=en&amp;_x_tr_hist=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This test<\/a> compared JSON search logs from ChatGPT against live search results. Across multiple queries, up to 90% of ChatGPT\u2019s cited URLs matched Google\u2019s top results \u2013 far outpacing overlap with Bing.
