But a new blog post (authored by Liz Reid, VP, head of Search) leaves out actual details about who\u2019s winning, and losing \u2013 and how much control publishers really have.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what Google says, and what they\u2019re not saying.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-google-ai-overviews-are-driving-more-searches\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Google_AI_Overviews_are_driving_more_searches\"><\/span>Google: AI Overviews are driving more searches<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cPeople are able to ask questions they could never ask before&#8230; searching more than ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Yes, but Google doesn\u2019t share how many queries are actually leading to clicks or<\/strong> how many are now fully answered on Google without the need to visit a site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-google-traffic-is-relatively-stable-year-over-year\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Google_Traffic_is_%E2%80%98relatively_stable_year-over-year\"><\/span>Google: Traffic is &#8216;relatively stable&#8217; year-over-year<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re actually sending slightly more quality clicks to websites than a year ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Yes, but<\/strong>: No data, no definitions. \u201cSlightly\u201d and \u201cquality\u201d are vague, unverified metrics. Google wouldn&#8217;t say how many total clicks are down or which sites are losing them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-google-ai-overviews-show-more-links-so-more-chances-to-click\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Google_AI_Overviews_show_more_links_so_more_chances_to_click\"><\/span>Google: AI Overviews show more links, so more chances to click<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cPeople are seeing more links on the page than before.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Yes, but<\/strong>: Google Search Console data shows for many sites that impressions are going up and clicks are down. People may &#8220;see&#8221; the links \u2013 but I may also &#8220;see&#8221; a display ad on a webpage that I completely ignore.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-google-click-quality-is-up\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Google_Click_quality_is_up\"><\/span>Google: Click quality is up<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cUsers don\u2019t quickly click back&#8230; typically a signal that a user is interested in the website.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Yes, but<\/strong>: AI search clicks aren&#8217;t always better traffic. Also, one report found LLM traffic isn&#8217;t as engaged as organic traffic (albeit, there isn&#8217;t a lot of data on this yet).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-google-search-behavior-is-shifting-users-want-authentic-voices\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Google_Search_behavior_is_shifting_%E2%80%93_users_want_%E2%80%9Cauthentic_voices%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Google: Search behavior is shifting \u2013 users want \u201cauthentic voices\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cPeople are increasingly seeking out and clicking on sites with forums, videos&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Yes, but<\/strong>: That shift may not be entirely natural. It could simply reflect Google\u2019s favoring its partner Reddit (though the Google&#8217;s Reddit partnership is unrelated to Reddit&#8217;s huge search visibility boost, according to Google) and its own video platform \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube<\/a>. <\/li>\n<li>Although, granted, there was much discussion a couple years back that people had to add &#8220;Reddit&#8221; to their searches to find what they actually wanted. Regardless, Reddit&#8217;s organic traffic has been booming since last year, often <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earing directly under AI Overviews or ads as the de facto top organic listing. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-google-the-web-is-healthy-and-thriving\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Google_The_web_is_healthy_and_thriving\"><\/span>Google: The web is healthy and thriving<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe continue to send billions of clicks to websites every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Yes, but<\/strong>: Billions mean nothing without context. The distribution of that traffic matters, especially for publishers whose traffic is vanishing. All we know is Google sees more than 5 trillion searches per year. And also numerous reports (flawed or not) indicate that CTR is down and impressions are up (a.k.a., the great decoupling) when AI Overviews appear.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-google-search-is-built-to-highlight-the-web\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Google_Search_is_built_to_highlight_the_web\"><\/span>Google: Search is built to highlight the web<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not the web or AI \u2014 it\u2019s both.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Yes, but<\/strong>: AI Overviews often repurpose and repackage web content, reducing the need to click. Google\u2019s framing of \u201chighlighting\u201d may be seen as summarizing what creators have created, without compensation and sometimes without credit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bottom-line\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bottom_line\"><\/span>Bottom line<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Google wants credit for expanding the web\u2019s reach, but won\u2019t or can&#8217;t show us the data. Without real transparency, it\u2019s hard to know where the truth lives.
