This is different from Snap Map, which lets users choose whether their location is updated only when they open the app or in real time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meta says location sharing is off by default on Instagram Map. Following <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2025\/08\/07\/instagram-map-location-sharing-privacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">concerns<\/a> around safety, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@mosseri\/post\/DNDwYMIsP7G\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Instagram head Adam Mosseri<\/a> reassured users that the feature is opt-in, and noted that some people are \u201cconfused\u201d about how the feature works.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance, people are accessing the feature and then seeing the map populated with the location information of some users. This is because the feature automatically pulls in location tags from recently posted Stories or Reels that include a tagged location.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s worth noting that this isn\u2019t new, as Instagram already had location tags visible to users in its map view. However, the new Instagram Map feature makes this information a lot easier to access. Here, you will be able to change your settings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Note that if you have location sharing turned off, others can still share their location with you, which means you\u2019ll be able to see them on the Map.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-use-instagram-map\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_use_Instagram_Map\"><\/span><strong>How to use Instagram Map<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you open the app, you will see the locations of friends who have shared their location with you. You will also see location-based Stories and Reels from people you follow.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if your friend attended a nearby music festival and posted a story while there, it will appear on the map. Similarly, if a creator you follow posts a reel about a new restaurant in your city, you\u2019ll be able to discover it on Instagram Map.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You will still see location-based content on the Map even if you have your location turned off.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You also can leave short, ephemeral messages, or \u201cNotes,\u201d on the map for others to see.
