“#NYPD cops call subway rider a male ‘Karen’ over mask question<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n A pair of maskless cops inside a subway stop snapp<\/a>ed back at a New Yorker who questioned why they weren\u2019t covering their faces \u2014 calling the straphanger a \u201cmale version of Karen,\u201d a new clip shows.<\/p>\n

The back-and-forth comes just days after Gov. Andrew Cuomo tapped the NYPD and MTA police to hand out $50 fines for flaunting the mask mandate on NYC subways.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs the fine applied just to me or to you guys too if you don\u2019t wear masks in the subway\u2026 I\u2019m just curious?\u201d asked an unnamed man who filmed his exchange and posted the clip<\/a> Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

One of the maskless cops responds, \u201cActually, it states that as long as you can maintain six feet of distance, you don\u2019t have to wear the mask.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you want to step within six feet of me, I\u2019ll gladly put on the mask,\u201d the cop continues.<\/p>\n

But the straphanger points out, the two officers were standing within a few feet of each other \u2014 causing the other cop to get annoyed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou got nothing better to do\u2026 you\u2019re the person that calls someone, ya know, when someone is selling water bottles in the streets\u2026 that\u2019s what you are, all right Karen?\u201d he shoots back, appearing annoyed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re like the male version of Karen, so have a nice day\u2026 take care, Karen.\u201d<\/p>\n

An NYPD spokesperson said in response to the video, \u201cIt\u2019s important officers are reinforcing the best health practices and wearing a mask for their own safety.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOfficers will continue to set the right example for the public and ensure safe transportation for riders,\u201d they added. \u201cIn addition, we are doing spot checks of our officers throughout the system.\u201d<\/p>\n

Police brass have been grilled over the last few months about the noticeable flaunting of the mask mandate among the ranks \u2014 despite losing nearly 50 uniformed and civilian members to the pandemic virus.<\/p>\n

The issue was renewed last week after Cuomo announced the $50 fine for straphangers who refuse to mask up this week.<\/p>\n

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea, though, brushed off the notion that cops are refusing to wear masks when asked on NY1 on Monday morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s something that we stress all the time\u2026 I would not agree with one of the statements that you made about them refusing to wear masks,\u201d Shea said.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan you get a picture of an officer that takes his mask off? Of course, you can like you can, like with any New Yorker,\u201d he said, claiming the photos were just a moment of officers captured without face coverings.<\/p>\n

Shea\u2019s comments came despite numerous candid<\/a> and staged shots of members of the NYPD without masks on social media<\/a> \u2014 some from the department\u2019s official feeds.\n <\/div>\n
