against Drake\u2019s lawyers who requested the label to \u201ccollect, review and produce\u201d communications from British chief executive Lucian Grainge because he was \u201cpersonally involved in decisions made regarding the marketing and promotion of [Not Like Us] around its release,\u201d <i><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2025\/aug\/15\/universal-deny-that-head-lucian-grainge-was-personally-involved-in-kendrick-lamar-attack-on-drake\">The Guardian<\/a><\/i> reports. The motion is the latest development in Drake\u2019s lawsuit against UMG over Kendrick Lamar\u2019s viral diss track, which contained lyrics calling Drake a pedophile.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            The suit, filed in January 2025, alleged that UMG \u201cintended to convey the specific, unmistakable and false factual allegation that Drake is a criminal paedophile, and to suggest that the public should resort to vigilante justice in response.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Of the latest motion, UMG\u2019s lawyers said that Drake&#8217;s argument \u201cdefy credulity&#8221; and are a waste of time. They have called for the motion to be denied.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            \u201cThe premise of Drake\u2019s motion \u2013 that he could not have lost a rap battle unless it was the product of some imagined secret conspiracy going to the top of UMG\u2019s corporate structure \u2013 is absurd,\u201d Lawyer Rollin A. Ransom said. \u201cSir Lucian is the CEO of a multinational enterprise; his days are spent determining and implementing global strategy, not vetting individual tracks or album covers or driving the release and promotional plans for any one recording.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            In March, Universal called the suit \u200b\u200b\u201cutterly without merit\u201d and filed a motion for it to be thrown out entirely.
