\n\tTerence Stamp, the strikingly handsome British actor who embodied the swinging sixties and whose versatility shone in\u00a0Billy Budd<\/em>, Superman\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert<\/em>, died Sunday, his family told<\/a> The New York Times<\/em>. He was 87.<\/p>\n

\n\tThey did not specify where he died or the cause, the news<\/a>paper said.<\/p>\n

\n\tStamp won the best actor award at the Cannes Film Festival for his terrifying performance as a psycho who holds a young woman (Samantha Eggar) hostage in William Wyler\u2019s The Collector\u00a0<\/em>(1965), then experienced a resurgence when he played the Kryptonian megalomaniac General<\/a> Zod in Superman <\/em>(1978) and\u00a0Superman II <\/em>(1980).<\/p>\n

\n\tStamp had supporting roles in\u00a0Legal Eagles\u00a0<\/em>(1986) and\u00a0Wall Street\u00a0<\/em>(1988), then received critical praise for portraying a veteran English crook in the Steven Soderbergh crime drama\u00a0The Limey\u00a0<\/em>(1999). Also that year, he gained\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0<\/em>immortality by playing Chancellor Valorum in\u00a0The Phantom Menace.<\/em><\/p>\n

\n\tIn his youth, the blue-eyed Stamp was widely considered one of the most handsome men onscreen, and Italian director Pier Paolo Pasolini used that to peculiar effect in\u00a0Teorema\u00a0<\/em>(1968), casting the actor as a nameless and wordless visitor who seduces an entire household. Pasolini made sure to include several close-up shots of Stamp\u2019s crotch in the film.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs the cavalry sergeant in\u00a0Far From the Madding Crowd\u00a0<\/em>(1967), he received equal top billing with Julie Christie despite the fact that Peter Finch and Alan Bates also played characters who romanced her flirtatious Bathsheba. \u201cThat was my mum\u2019s favorite movie of mine,\u201d he once said. \u201cShe always thought I looked better [in it] than I looked in anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe feature includes a memorable whirling montage<\/a> of Stamp, who was naturally left-handed, showing off his swordsmanship to woo Christie on a hillside. Director John Schlesinger insisted that all cavalry men before 1860 were right-handed, and so Stamp obliged.<\/p>\n

\n\tOffscreen, he romanced Christie, and he claimed both were name-dropped in The Kinks\u2019 1967 hit song \u201cWaterloo Sunset\u201d \u2014 \u201cTerry meets Julie, Waterloo Station, every Friday night\u201d \u2014 though the band\u2019s frontman, Ray Davies, denied that in his autobiography.<\/p>\n

\n\tStamp also dated English supermodel Jean Shrimpton, and when that relationship ended, he began a round-the-world trip<\/a> to make sense of it all, stopping first in Egypt and winding up in Bombay. It was there that he received a telegram addressed to \u201cClarence Stamp,\u201d inviting him to meet Superman <\/em>director Richard Donner for a chance to star opposite Marlon Brando.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cTwo actors of my generations were Brando and [James] Dean,\u201d he told interviewer Michael Parkinson in 1988. \u201cThey were the two idols. Dean was no longer with us and Brando was still around, so the idea of getting up on film with him, albeit brief, was irresistible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHowever, working alongside the two-time Oscar winner was disapp<\/a>ointing, he said. Brando, playing Superman\u2019s father, Jor-El, didn\u2019t bother to learn his lines, having his dialogue written in a large font on posters placed behind the set lights. \u201cHow are you going to play King Lear and Macbeth if you can\u2019t learn a line?\u201d Stamp asked. \u201cI\u2019ve learned them already,\u201d was Brando\u2019s dismissive retort.<\/p>\n

\n\tStamp, then 24, received a supporting actor Oscar nomination in 1963 for his screen debut as the angelic and optimistic HMS Avenger crewman Billy Budd. His captain was played by Peter Ustinov, who directed, co-wrote and produced the film.<\/p>\n

\n\tStamp\u2019s confidence in the screen test was shattered when he spied Ustinov looking out over the rooftops as he waited for him. \u201cHe was so powerful that everything that I said seemed very thin.\u00a0And I just stopped speaking,\u201d he said. Ustinov hired him, though, as Stamp had unwittingly replicated Billy Budd\u2019s gormless behavior.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis is Terence Stamp\u201d the film\u2019s trailer screams, \u201cthe young actor hailed by famed columnist Louella Parsons as the screen\u2019s outstanding new star discovery.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe received the most promising newcomer (male) award at the Golden Globes, and the film was voted one of the year\u2019s 10 best by the National Board of Review.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a career spanning six decades, perhaps his most challenging performance came after he was offered the role of Bernadette, a transgender woman who embarks on an Australian road trip with two drag queens, in\u00a0The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert<\/em> (1994).<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI thought it was a joke, but a woman friend of mine just happened to be present when I was getting calls from my agent about the script, and she pointed out to me in a very incisive way that my fear was out of all proportion to the possible consequences,\u201d he told<\/a> the British Film Institute.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBut it wasn\u2019t a fun thing, or anything I was looking forward to. It was, \u2018Fuck me, this is the last thing in the world I want to do: be in fucking Australia with paparazzi.\u2019 It was like a nightmare. But it was only when I got there, and got through the fear, that it became one of the great experiences of my whole career. It was probably the most fun thing I\u2019ve ever done.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film grossed more than $16 million at the Australian box office, screened at Cannes and won the Oscar for best costume design.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAt the beginning of the film, we\u2019re distracted by the unexpected sight of Terence Stamp in drag,\u201d Roger Ebert wrote, \u201cbut Stamp is able to bring a convincing humanity to the character.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tStamp was born on July 22, 1938, in Stepney, London, the oldest of five children. His father was a tugboat captain who was often away for long stretches.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe won a scholarship to the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art and later shared a house in London with Michael Caine as the two began their movie careers. When Stamp turned down the film lead in\u00a0Alfie\u00a0<\/em>despite playing the role on Broadway in 1964, Caine snapped it up. (The British acting legends acted on stage in\u00a0The Long and the Short and the Tall<\/em> yet never appeared together in a movie.)<\/p>\n

\n\tStamp\u2019s spark for acting began, he said, when he saw\u00a0Beau Geste\u00a0<\/em>(1939) in a movie theater.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe empathy I felt from Gary Cooper was life-changing, and a secret dream was born in the darkened auditorium,\u201d he wrote in his 2017 memoir,\u00a0The Ocean Fell Into the Drop.<\/em><\/p>\n

\n\tHis earlier memoirs were 1987\u2019s\u00a0Stamp Album<\/em>, 1988\u2019s\u00a0Coming Attractions<\/em>, 1989\u2019s\u00a0Double Feature\u00a0<\/em>and 2011\u2019s\u00a0Rare Stamps: Reflections on Living, Breathing and Acting.\u00a0<\/em>He wrote the 1993 fiction novel The<\/em>\u00a0Night\u00a0<\/em>and in 2001 co-authored with Elizabeth Buxton a healthy eating manual for those who are wheat and lactose-intolerant called\u00a0The Stamp Collection Cookbook<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tHis other films included the spy comedy\u00a0Modesty Blaise\u00a0<\/em>(1966); Ken Loach\u2018s 1967 debut,\u00a0Poor Cow<\/em>; Frank Oz\u2019s\u00a0Bowfinger\u00a0<\/em>(1999); and Bryan Singer\u2018s\u00a0Valkyrie\u00a0<\/em>(2008). More recently, he appeared in Miss Peregrine\u2019s Home for Peculiar Children<\/em> (2016), Viking Destiny<\/em> (2018),\u00a0Murder Mystery<\/em> (2019) and Edgar Wright\u2019s Last Night in Soho<\/em> (2021).<\/p>\n

\n\tFor television, Stamp hosted the first season of the horror anthology series<\/a>\u00a0The Hunger<\/em>, re-entered the Superman world by voicing Jor-El on\u00a0Smallville\u00a0<\/em>and tried to solve the crime at the center of the 2017 Agatha Christie adaptation\u00a0Crooked House<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn New Year\u2019s Eve in 2002, Stamp, then 64, married 29-year-old pharmacologist Elizabeth O\u2019Rourke, whom he had met in Bondi, Australia. They divorced in 2008.<\/p>\n

\n\tHis late brother, Chris Stamp, was a co-manager and producer for The Who in the band\u2019s earlier days.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the DVD extras of\u00a0Priscilla, Queen of the Desert<\/em>, Stamp \u2014 in character as Bernadette \u2014 is asked, \u201cWhy is Terence Stamp so attractive?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWell, he possesses the three things that any woman would want,\u201d he says. \u201cHe\u2019s funny, he\u2019s romantic, and he has wisdom.\u201d<\/p>\n
