Since the end of his acclaimed indie rock duo Girlpool, Tucker has taken the occasional shift at Open Heart Collective in Encino, where he now resides. It\u2019s run by his ex-bandmate and close friend Harmony Tividad\u2019s mom, who conducts Tarot card readings and intuition workshops. Sometimes he leads sessions on softening the inner critic called \u201cPure Heart Songs.\u201d The goal is to learn to let go, to soak in a world where Tucker doesn\u2019t have to be in control.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            Tucker had to learn when to take charge and when to surrender while making his debut solo album <i>Paw<\/i>. I know I\u2019ve gotten there if I feel like I can play the song on the curb with my guitar.\u201d Tucker cites country-folk legends like Gillian Welch and Emmylou Harris as key inspirations. The songs retain Girlpool\u2019s idiosyncratic <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach to rock, turning it into a gentle undercurrent, while reaching for bigger heights and stretching for more defiant anthemic choruses. Even the ballads embrace bombast.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Tucker points out that the record is not full of epiphanies. It\u2019s an album about wrestling with an \u201cinvestment in someone else\u2019s wellness.\u201d Sometimes, he says, the songs can feel like \u201ctantrums,\u201d thumping rhythmic compositions worming their way through lovelorn nights. Other times they feel like \u201cearnest-ass\u201d love songs. \u201cMy Life Isn\u2019t Leaving You,\u201d the final song on <i>Paw<\/i>,  is the only moment of clarity. \u201cA lot of this album is about the storm, like a boat in the sea. But this song is about the anchor. The band formed in 2013 with Harmony Tividad and quickly garnered rapturous critical acclaim across four studio albums. Over time however, Tucker and his bandmate Harmony Tividad started to realize they were writing more and more songs on their own.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            After Girlpool reached its natural conclusion in 2022, Tucker got a job working as a camp counselor at a treatment center for queer and trans youth. \u201cIt was a really profound zone to tap into. I also recognized these similarities [between counseling and] songwriting, the act of getting things out.\u201d Only in that space of discomfort could there be revelation\u2014or the beginning of a song. \u201cIt\u2019s been cool to take time to record and have\u2014I wouldn\u2019t want to say normal because nothing about my life seems normal\u2013but a different rhythm.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-273415\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>\u201cI want [the album] to really feel like I was standing on my two feet with my palms open and naked<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-273400\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            <br \/>Much of the music on <i>Paw<\/i> is inspired by Tucker\u2019s former partner, the end of their relationship, and Tucker\u2019s road back to himself. \u201cI want it to really feel like I was standing on my two feet with my palms open and naked,\u201d he says with a grin. But the album wasn\u2019t created in isolation. The folksy \u201cAngel\u201d features MUNA\u2019s Katie Gavin, who served Tucker banana bread and tea while they watched a songwriting class on alternate tunings taught by modern folk giant Adrianne Lenker. Alaska Reid injected a sense of play to the recording process, co-writing the song \u201cKnots\u201d and joining Tucker and his friends on a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> to Montana where they finished <i>Paw<\/i>. The bracing photographs that accompany the singles \u201cBig Drops,\u201d \u201cMalibu,\u201d and \u201cLike I\u2019m Young\u201d were taken during the trip by Petra Collins. They still feel raw to Tucker, like lightbulb moments showing an exposed wound.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            One of the album\u2019s most intense moments is \u201cLike I\u2019m Young,\u201d a confrontational account of the things one loses when coming out as trans. The devastating power ballad chronicles a relationship where Tucker feels \u201chow far\u2026from being a man\u201d someone he\u2019s dating believes him to be. His voice writhes and screams through the pain: \u201cIt&#8217;s true that no matter what I do\/That I&#8217;m just wet not hardening\/But can my hand fool you?\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            Tucker tells me that for a long time he didn\u2019t let himself feel the full weight of being trans. \u201cI think as a protective mechanism early on I convinced myself there was no difference. But I was dissociated from the reality that in the world [being trans] is very different. A <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>. \u201cIf you were an animal would you rather have paws, wings, talons, or hooves?\u201d The question is meant to subconsciously reveal how one meets the earth. \u201cHow do you make contact?\u201d He clarifies. \u201cFor me, it\u2019s a pawprint, I\u2019m descending into my experience. It\u2019s kind of soft and sweet, but also when I\u2019m telling people the title of the record they\u2019re saying \u2018That\u2019s cute,\u2019 but I\u2019m like \u2018No, dude. It\u2019s not cute.\u2019\u201d He laughs.
