It\u2019s no secret that animation studio Qzil.la\u00a0<\/strong>is interested in AI and similar technology<\/a>. Beyond its website mentioning its intention to cause \u201cdigital disruption\u201d in the anime<\/a> industry through (among other things) the advancement of AI and its collaboration with web3 brand\u00a0Azuki\u00a0<\/strong>on the Enter The Garden\u00a0<\/em>anime anthology, its upcoming TV anime Risou no Himo Seikatsu<\/em> \u2014 planned for a 2026 release \u2014 app<\/a>arently uses AI for around 60% of its animation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thanks to its history, the recently announced Sekiro: No Defeat<\/em> \u2014 an adaptation of FromSoftware\u2019s\u00a0Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice <\/em>video game<\/a> \u2014 has inspired debate<\/a> on whether the anime uses AI in its workflow (in hindsight, perhaps the inclusion of the words \u201cfully hand-drawn\u201d in the press release was meant to be a preemptive measure to such discourse). And just a few days later, Qzil.la has deemed it necessary to issue a statement denying the use of generative AI in this particular production.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn order to maximally deliver the unique charm of the original game, the production is progressing with hand drawn 2D animation used for the entire product, and generative AI is not used at all,\u201d the studio said. It added that the entirety of the staff was \u201cputting their soul\u201d into each cut.<\/span><\/p>\n

While I\u2019m not a fan of generative AI, it was always hard to imagine Sekiro: No Defeat <\/em>using it when its staff includes names like director Kenichi Kutsuna<\/strong><\/a> (an accomplished animator who storyboarded and directed the impressive opening animations for Magical Destroyers<\/em>,\u00a0Vlad Love\u00a0<\/i>(\u201cMitsugu\u201d Version), and\u00a0The Fire Hunter<\/em>), background art director Yuji Kaneko<\/strong>\u00a0(Tengoku Daimakyo<\/em>, Kowloon Generic Romance<\/em>), and action animation director Takashi Mukoda<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(Run With the Wind<\/em> co-main animator). While there are those who simply don\u2019t gel with the anime\u2019s particular aesthetic<\/a>, the statement should hopefully lead to a reduction in accusations of Sekiro: No Defeat<\/em> being made with AI.<\/span><\/p>\n
