A former software developer has been sentenced to four years in prison for sabotaging his former employer\u2019s network after leaving the company.<\/p>\n

Davis Lu, 55, was convicted of installing a \u201ckill switch\u201d on the network of his former employer by planting malicious code designed to crash its servers in the event that he was fired.<\/p>\n

The kill switch was activated when the company terminated Lu\u2019s employment and deactivated his credentials, causing the kill switch, \u201cIsDLEnabledinAD\u201d \u2014 referring to whether Lu\u2019s account was still active in the company\u2019s Active Directory. The incident locked out thousands of employees from accessing the company\u2019s systems.<\/p>\n

The Justice Department, which prosecuted the case<\/a>, said Lu\u2019s employer, which was not named but reportedly<\/a> was the power tech company Eaton, said the incident caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Lu was discovered in part through his internet search history, the Justice Department said, which included searches researching \u201cmethods to escalate privileges, hide processes, and rapidly delete files.\u201d<\/p>\n
