In Canada, these relationships are far from rare.<\/p>\n<p>A <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adp.ca\/-\/media\/adpca\/redesign2019\/pdf\/adp_q4_19_workplace_relationship_study_press_release_final_for_distribution.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">2019 ADP Canada survey<\/a> of 885 employees found that one in three have been romantically involved with a colleague. Younger workers aged 18 to 34 were especially likely to report such relationships (41%).<\/p>\n<p>Similar patterns emerge in the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2020\/08\/20\/a-profile-of-single-americans\" target=\"_blank\">United States<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/society\/articles\/27849-how-do-brits-find-love\" target=\"_blank\">the United Kingdom<\/a>, where surveys have found that 18% of partnered respondents (those married, living with a partner or in a committed relationship) met their significant other at work.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s no surprise. We spend much of our waking lives with colleagues, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.jbusres.2022.113304\" target=\"_blank\">building shared experiences and discovering common values and interests<\/a>. At a time when <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20240410-how-love-is-changing-in-the-tinder-age\" target=\"_blank\">finding and keeping love seems harder than ever<\/a>, the office can feel like a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/bs13090760\" target=\"_blank\">rare place where authenticity and comfort come naturally<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Workplace relationships can contribute to a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/about\/press-room\/new-shrm-research-shows-workplace-relationships-contribute-to-po?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\">range of positive workplace outcomes<\/a>. Most notably, they are linked to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/bs13090760\" target=\"_blank\">increased job satisfaction, stronger organizational commitment, improved morale and enhanced collaboration and teamwork<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, workplace relationships can also create <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/doi.org\/10.1108\/GM-11-2019-0198\" target=\"_blank\">significant organizational challenges<\/a>, which is why knowing how to handle them is key.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_work_and_love_mix\"><\/span>When work and love mix<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Workplace romance refers to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/adventures-in-dating\/201306\/workplace-romance-motives\" target=\"_blank\">sexual or romantic relationships between members of the same organization<\/a> that both parties recognize as more than strictly professional.<\/p>\n<p>These relationships can include dating, extramarital affairs, casual hook-ups, flings or <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/ca\/blog\/in-the-name-of-love\/202404\/why-are-friends-with-benefits-on-the-rise\" target=\"_blank\">friends-with-benefits<\/a> arrangements.<\/p>\n<p>While many romances have minimal impact, some erode organizational trust by creating <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/doi.org\/10.1108\/SHR-09-2024-0074\" target=\"_blank\">perceptions of favoritism, exclusion or manipulation<\/a>, especially when they involve a power imbalance.<\/p>\n<p>When trust is undermined, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1080\/13603124.2025.2534350\" target=\"_blank\">research shows<\/a> that collaboration suffers, morale declines and workplace culture deteriorates. This is why organizations often have policies surrounding workplace romances.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_risks_of_workplace_romance\"><\/span>The risks of workplace romance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In Canada, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/alis.alberta.ca\/succeed-at-work\/manage-challenges\/a-guide-to-managing-romance-in-the-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\">there are no laws that prohibit consensual relationships at work<\/a>, and most countries similarly don&#8217;t have laws governing workplace relationships.<\/p>\n<p>However, Canada does have legal frameworks that require employers to maintain a safe, respectful workplace. While some workplace romances lead to enduring partnerships\u2014<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/work\/1477671\/in-becoming-michelle-obama-recalls-falling-in-love-at-work\" target=\"_blank\">Michelle and Barack Obama famously met at a Chicago law firm when she was a junior associate and he was an intern<\/a>\u2014others can end less happily.<\/p>\n<p>Failed relationships can leave both people vulnerable to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/23294884221100800\" target=\"_blank\">reputational damage, career derailment<\/a> and, in the worst cases, allegations of harassment <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.jbusres.2022.113304\" target=\"_blank\">that can result in termination<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These concerns are underscored by the prevalence of misconduct. According to a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/daily-quotidien\/240212\/dq240212a-eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\">2024 Statistics Canada<\/a> report, almost half of women and nearly one-third of men say they have experienced inappropriate sexualized behavior at work.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_some_couples_keep_it_quiet\"><\/span>Why some couples keep it quiet<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Many employees choose not to disclose their workplace relationships. According to the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adp.ca\/-\/media\/adpca\/redesign2019\/pdf\/adp_q4_19_workplace_relationship_study_press_release_final_for_distribution.pdf?la=en&amp;hash=24C6E3BE65D317D24C6F8A6A5972F07C4D9948B1\" target=\"_blank\">ADP Canada survey<\/a>, nearly half (45%) of those in workplace relationships kept it secret from someone at work, most often management or human resources.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/about\/press-room\/new-shrm-survey-workplace-romance-2023\" target=\"_blank\">2023 survey of more than 600 working Americans<\/a> from the Society for Human Resource Management across a variety of ages, industries and job levels found that 82% of workers who had been in a workplace romance kept it secret from their employer.<\/p>\n<p>Reasons for secrecy range from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.taylorfrancis.com\/chapters\/edit\/10.4324\/9781003254034-11\/socio-emotional-resources-principle-human-dignity-workplace-coralie-fiori-khayat\" target=\"_blank\">a desire for privacy<\/a> to concerns about <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/2329488417731860\" target=\"_blank\">gossip, judgment or professional repercussions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This lack of disclosure means employers may be unaware of relationships and therefore <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/bs12050126\" target=\"_blank\">less able to protect all parties<\/a> if conflicts, ethical concerns or allegations arise.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Making_love_work_in_the_workplace\"><\/span>Making love work in the workplace<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you find yourself navigating romance at work, here are five steps to protect both your relationship and your career:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Reflect on your motivations. Ask yourself why you want to pursue the relationship and whether it <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.4324\/9781003443148\" target=\"_blank\">aligns with your personal and professional goals<\/a>. Consider how it might affect your career, the people you work with and the overall workplace culture. This kind of honest self-check can <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/struggling-to-make-decisions-at-work-learn-how-to-build-confidence-239183\" target=\"_blank\">help you make clear, confident decisions<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Know the rules. Review your organization&#8217;s policy on workplace romance. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/alis.alberta.ca\/succeed-at-work\/manage-challenges\/a-guide-to-managing-romance-in-the-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\">While the law may not always address it directly<\/a>, many employers require disclosure or limit relationships within reporting lines. Understanding these rules early can help you avoid misunderstandings or career surprises.<\/li>\n<li>Be transparent. If disclosure is required, share the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> directly with your manager or human resources, rather than letting it spread through gossip.
