\n Madison Reyes says her starring role in \u201cJulie and the Phantoms\u201d was tailor-made for her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember reading Julie\u2019s character descript<\/a>ion: \u2018A 15-year-old Latin American girl, she\u2019s a high school student, she likes playing the piano and she can sing,\u2019\u201d Reyes, 16, tells The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was like, \u2018This reminds me of me!\u2019 It really caught my attention.\u201d<\/p>\n

The musical comedy series<\/a>, available on Netflix, follows California high schooler Julie (Reyes), who\u2019s grieving and struggling with her natural music talents in the wake of her mother\u2019s death. When she finds an old CD from Sunset Curve \u2014 a boy band whose members died in 1995 on the brink of making it big \u2014 she accidentally summons their ghosts.<\/p>\n

Julie, mysteriously, is the only living person who can see them; she and band members Luke (Charlie Gillepsie), Alex (Owen Joyner) and Reggie (Jeremy Shada) join forces to help each other find meaning in their lives \u2014 and afterlives.<\/p>\n

Through the titular band they form together, Julie is able to rediscover her joie de vivre and prove herself in her school\u2019s music program \u2014 and the three \u201cphantoms\u201d discover that the world can see and hear them when they play with Julie.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe experiences the things that teenagers go through \u2014 grief and loss \u2014 [and] those things are not talked about much in kids\u2019 shows,\u201d says Reyes, who grew up in Brooklyn. \u201cAnd also the music aspect was a plus, because not only do I get to act, I get to sing and perform, which is something that I\u2019ve always wanted to do. It was like a little present gifted to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actors all sing and play real instruments in the show\u2019s musical numbers, though Reyes says they did that through a combination of live filming and then editing in the tracks so the sound would be in sync.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s all helmed by executive producer\/ director\/ choreographer Kenny Ortega, who\u2019s known for \u201cDirty Dancing,\u201d \u201cFerris Bueller\u2019s Day Off\u201d and the \u201cHigh School Musical\u201d franchise.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat was really cool about it was that Kenny established that we do have a say in the process. He really made it clear to us that we were his partners, not like he was a boss and we were his workers,\u201d says Reyes. \u201cHe really wanted us to know that it was a team effort. Being able to work with the man who does so much for different generations is incredible and surreal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reyes, who\u2019s now in high school in Pennsylvania, says that the production worked around her schedule as a student.<\/p>\n

\u201cI tried to give [the audition] my all, which was hard because I had [freshman year] finals. When I did get the callback, Netflix and the others were very caring, like \u2018Let\u2019s get you to finish school first and then we\u2019ll have you come out.\u2019 So I finished my finals and the next day I was on a plane to LA.<\/p>\n

\u201cI constantly look back on how things just fell into place,\u201d she says. \u201cGrowing up I was like, \u2018I want to be an actress; I want to be in a band and be a singer.\u2019 You\u2019re constantly flip-flopping. So being able to have this gig where I get to do all of these things that I love so much in one go was amazing. There\u2019s a lot of things I want to try [next], like be in a superhero movie or in a Disney princess movie or going on Broadway.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019m just taking it day by day.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
