       <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            For nearly six weeks straight this summer, I joined the millions of viewers tuned in to see this year\u2019s batch of Instagramable islanders quest to find love in a Fiji villa on Love Island USA\u2019s seventh season. Two of the biggest contestants to emerge from its 36-episode run were <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/x_olandria\/?hl=en\">Olandria Carthen<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/nicolasvans\/?hl=en\">Nicolas Vansteenberghe<\/a> \u2014 an interracial couple who, once a make-believe ship fueled by fan-edited videos online, became a prominent fixture on Season 7.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Olandria, a dark-skinned Black woman who\u2019s an elevator sales professional from a tiny town in Alabama, and Nic, model, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> nurse and typical goofy white guy, were initially paired with different people for the majority of the season (Olandria with Taylor Williams, and Nic with Cierra Ortega, who left the show following a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/GMA\/Culture\/love-island-star-cierra-ortega-addresses-exit-after\/story?id=123656418\">resurfaced<\/a> post of her using an anti-Asian slur), though that didn\u2019t stop fans from noting their steamy chemistry during the show\u2019s many kissing challenges. When they finally coupled up during Casa Amor, and then again, at the tail end of the show, it was a twist that no one, not even the production-gods themselves, could\u2019ve conjured up. \u201cThey called us crazy!\u201d I commented, celebrating, online at the time. \u201cThey called us delusional!\u201d My friends and I devoured the Nicolandria crumbs \u2014 and we weren\u2019t alone. After the season\u2019s finale, #Nicolandria, though landing in second place, surpassed the winners, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/love-island-usa-season-7-winners-amaya-bryan-unfollow-each-other-instagram-11780301\">Amaya Espinal and Bryan Arenales<\/a>, in popularity.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-273526\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Love Island USA Season 7 Reunion | Official Trailer | Peacock Original\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/T_qw9yXcw1M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-273520\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            But as weeks have passed, and ahead of the anticipated reunion special on Monday, I\u2019ve noticed a strange tone to the fawning online discourse around Nicolandria: fans of the show and the couple seemingly <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lauding them in an obsessive and borderline fetishizing way. Viral posts fantasizing about Nic and Olandria as \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ship_psychosis\/status\/1956126522147770741\">somebody\u2019s fine ass parents<\/a>\u201d and fanpages titled \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/xblackreader\/status\/1948619802798334034\">come here cream<\/a>\u201d feel like they\u2019ve crossed a line even for your standard para<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> post: like the value of their relationship lies less in the two&#8217;s compatibility and solely on the fact that they&#8217;re an interracial couple.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-273521\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            I should preface this by addressing the obvious: that I understand why viewers have taken on a parasocial liking to Olandria and Nic&#8217;s relationship in the first place \u2014 me included. As a Black woman, I\u2019ve also struggled with feeling desirable, whether I was dating within or outside of my race, and witnessing Olandria find love made me emotional; I was happy to see a Black woman desired by someone who unapologetically admired her on reality TV.&#8221;\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Monique Wilson, a New York City-based writer and host and of podcast <i><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/bet-on-black\/id1806304086\">Bet on Black<\/a><\/i>, shares that sentiment: &#8220;When we see our experiences reflected in those stories, we&#8217;re always going to root for us to win.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kiara Smith, a Black pop culture writer, was also an initial advocate for the couple and the show\u2019s so-called \u201cswirl\u201d agenda (\u201cswirl\u201d is a code word for interracial relationships that Smith uses to describe when Black people date outside of their race) over the past weeks.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            \u201cIt goes against a narrative in the Black community that a Black woman can only be happy with a Black man,\u201d Smith says. This isn\u2019t to say that #Blacklove isn\u2019t equally valid and beautiful, but it\u2019s not the only way Black women can be loved, she adds. \u201cMany times in my experience, Black men have very little interest in Black women, and many of them tend to go for women outside of their race that they deem as more submissive and susceptible to their bullshit.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-273527\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">somebody\u2019s fine ass parents from the 70s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/s6qWbXFQEy\">pic.twitter.com\/s6qWbXFQEy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 jay \ud83d\udda4 (@ship_psychosis) <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ship_psychosis\/status\/1956126522147770741?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 14, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-273522\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            But, as I\u2019ve been reminded lately, this thinking can be flawed. Much of Nicolandria\u2019s journey reminded me of Season 6\u2019s JaNa Craig and Kenny Rodriguez, one-third of season\u2019s famed \u201cPower Puff Gang\u201d trifecta who catapulted their respective season to virality. Like Olandria, JaNa struggled to find connections in the villa before ending up in an interracial relationship with Kenny mid-way through the season. But after dating for nearly a year, the two broke up this August following <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmopolitan.com\/entertainment\/celebs\/a65549333\/what-was-found-on-kenny-rodriguez-phone\/\">allegations<\/a> that Kenny, a Dominican man from the Bronx, cheated on JaNa, a dark-skinned Black woman. It was also <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmopolitan.com\/entertainment\/celebs\/a65549333\/what-was-found-on-kenny-rodriguez-phone\/\">alleged<\/a> that Kenny spewed racist comments about JaNa and how he was in the relationship for clout. Around the same time, <i>Love Island UK\u2019s<\/i> Whitney Adebayo from season 10, who is Nigerian, posted her <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/love-island-uk-alums-whitney-adebayo-and-lochlan-nowaki-break-up-after-nearly-2-years-11718130\">split<\/a> with Lochan Nowacki, who is half-Indian, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmopolitan.com\/entertainment\/celebs\/a65592081\/love-island-uk-whitney-accuses-lochan-of-calling-skin-dirty\/\">claiming<\/a> that he was a \u201cculture vulture\u201d and joked about her skin being \u201cdirty.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            (As if anticipating future betrayal, Olandria spoke about her fears of interracial dating on Tish Cyrus\u2019s \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4CwYDnSKgUQ\">Sorry We\u2019re Cyrus<\/a>\u201d podcast: \u201cThey [non-Black men] don\u2019t mind being physical with you, but when it comes to actually valuing you as a woman, being in a relationship, and marrying you, it\u2019s something totally different\u2026Dating outside of my race has always scared me because am I a fetish to you?\u201d)\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Aiyana Ishmael, a New York City-based writer, points out that Nicolandria is arriving at a weird point in time where being in an interracial coupling right now is part of the zeitgeist, with trending TikTok songs like \u201cgot a white boy on my roster, he\u2019d be feeding me pasta and lobster,\u201d and proliferating jokes from Black women about how they\u2019re \u201cgoing to get a white man.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-273529\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>Witnessing Olandria find love made me emotional; I was happy to see a Black woman desired by someone who unapologetically admired her on reality TV.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-273523\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            The current era of interracial-couple trends like \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/discover\/soft-life-black-woman-white-husband\">Black women, soft life<\/a>\u201d enforces the idea that white men will give Black women a life of luxury and ease, Ishmael adds. \u201cThis idealized love fans have for what Black women deserve is because they have been mistreated by their own so much that they think the right answer is a non-Black man,\u201d she says. \u201cTo have this modern fantasy that white men are gonna do right by all Black women is interesting, when historically that\u2019s not [always] the case. It\u2019s a little too dreamy for my own personal likings.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            What now fuels Smith\u2019s pro-Nicolandria stance \u2014 and what <i>should<\/i> fuel everyone else&#8217;s \u2014 isn\u2019t based on the fantasy of hot Black women dating hot non-black men; her support is rooted in wanting Black women, who are often portrayed and perceived as <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.teenvogue.com\/story\/love-island-usas-olandria-and-chelley-talk-mean-girl-allegations-and-makeup-mishaps\">villains<\/a> on TV, to find genuine happiness on and off screen, something that\u2019s not often granted in the realm of romance-driven reality TV like <i>The Bachelorette<\/i>, who only got its first Black woman lead in 2017.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-273524\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Nicolandria as a pair has clearly culturally resonated as they\u2019ve racked up partnerships with Nyx Cosmetics, Kulani Kinis, among others, in addition to them becoming a cultural phenomenon even before they set foot out of the villa. No matter what happens at the reunion, or how their relationship unfolds, people should loosen their surveillance and stop projecting their interracial fantasies onto two people who were thrust into the limelight mere months ago and are still exploring their connection with millions tuned into their every move.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            &#8220;If they don&#8217;t last forever, they don&#8217;t last forever,&#8221; Wilson says.
