But in the AI-powered search landscape, tone and topics aren\u2019t enough.<\/p>\n<p>High-level and simplified persona models miss that your target customer is more than just your target customer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They are living, breathing people, all influenced by outside factors that need to be considered when tailoring content to their needs.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"so-whats-missing\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"So_whats_missing\"><\/span>So, what\u2019s missing?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Data on Sara\u2019s environment and what makes her a real human is missing.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t know what\u2019s going on in Sara\u2019s world that could be influencing her intent, needs, and decision-making process when she types in a query.<\/p>\n<p>When crafting our personas, ideally, we would:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Conduct user interviews and testing to help dig into Sara\u2019s life a bit more.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Find a group of \u201cSaras\u201d who will provide similar answers and tell us about \u201cher\u201d life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most of us lack the time, budget, or resources to do this, though, leaving us with a knowledge gap we still need to fill.<\/p>\n<p>If you gathered small business owners from similar industries and asked them to list the steps they took to start, you\u2019d probably get similar answers.<\/p>\n<p>If you think about it from a contextual perspective only, sure.<\/p>\n<p>But if you listen more closely, you\u2019ll likely notice a difference in the order they did things and what answers they found valuable at each stage.<\/p>\n<p>And this order, likely influenced by their environment, impacts what they do and don\u2019t know when they land on leverage.<\/p>\n<p>Someone in Florida, which has the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/stories\/2025\/05\/smallest-businesses.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">highest per-capita rate of business owners<\/a>, will have different needs behind the query \u201chow to start a business\u201d than someone in West Virginia, where that rate is the lowest.<\/p>\n<p>A person in Florida is statistically more likely to know someone who\u2019s started a business, giving them easier access to information and inspiration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, there were just over three business applications per 100 adult residents, according to Census data.<\/p>\n<p>In West Virginia, where there was only one new business application per 100 adults, the story is different.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A business owner there may have some personal connections, but starting a business is a more novel, less familiar path.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re more likely to need guidance on the fundamentals, like business plans and logistics.<\/p>\n<p>While both Saras may search \u201chow to start a business,\u201d what they need from that query isn\u2019t the same.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Floridian Sara is probably ready for logistical steps \u2013 forming an LLC, building a website \u2013 thanks to greater exposure and access to resources.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>West Virginia Sara, on the other hand, needs foundational information first: what a business plan is, how legal structures differ, or where to find funding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Same question, different needs.<\/p>\n<p>You can\u2019t capture every detail shaping a person\u2019s intent.<\/p>\n<p>Still, even a simple environmental context like this can help you interpret it more accurately \u2013 and build personas that feel more human.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how the intent behind the keyword shifts based on this environmental with most of the jargon, and is more likely to jump into action with a clear list.<\/td>\n<td>Lives in a state with the lowest per-capita rate of business owners. <\/p>\n<p>In 2024, West Virginia reported about 1 new business application per 100 residents.<\/p>\n<p>Looking for more foundational insights, like:<br \/>\u2013 Needing a business plan. <br \/>\u2013 Things to consider before starting a busines.<\/p>\n<p>Has no idea what any of these things are yet, and isn\u2019t ready for the steps.<\/p>\n<p>Needs more education before taking any action.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/figure>\n<p>You can argue that you have the content that ultimately fits both of these intents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But is that content ranking for \u201chow to start a business\u201d? Or is it featured in LLM responses or AI Overviews?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I know my related content isn\u2019t.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s ranking for \u201chow to write a business plan\u201d and \u201csteps to getting an LLC,\u201d because SEO until now has been about mastering a query, not tailoring your content to a user\u2019s environment.<\/p>\n<p>In my \u201cdeprecated\u201d SEO strategy, I have a pillar page for \u201chow to start a business\u201d that covers everything from business conception to making your first sale.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve got dozens of internal links with beautiful anchor text to every supplemental guide Sara needs.
