Language evolves, and so too should how we define search in the AI era.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"bialty-container\">\n<p>Carolyn Shelby published an article on SEJ the other day with the headline <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/stop-trying-to-make-geo-happen\/554629\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stop Trying To Make GEO Happen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop trying to make GEO h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en. It\u2019s not going to happen,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>With all due respect to Shelby, whom I know and have tons of respect for, GEO is already happening. <\/p>\n<p>The arguments I\u2019ve seen dismissing GEO on LinkedIn and elsewhere lately (often by \u201cit\u2019s just SEO\u201d people) seem to ignore history and reality.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"geo-is-already-real\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"GEO_is_already_real\"><\/span>GEO is already real<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cGenerative Engine Optimization\u201d isn\u2019t just a buzzword someone cooked up on LinkedIn. <\/p>\n<p>The GEO term was formally introduced in a research paper in December 2023. <\/p>\n<p>Since then, it has appeared in conference talks, industry analyses, and practitioner discussions. <\/p>\n<p>Marketers and researchers alike are already using it.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t wishful thinking. It\u2019s early adoption.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"language-evolves\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Language_evolves\"><\/span>Language evolves<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Look no further than a certain American multinational corporation and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> company \u2013 nobody assumes \u201cApple\u201d only means fruit. <\/p>\n<p>Tech is built on redefined words. <\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cCloud\u201d doesn\u2019t just mean a white thing in the sky.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cCookies\u201d aren\u2019t just baked goods.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cSpam\u201d isn\u2019t just canned meat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We didn\u2019t reject those terms because of any \u201clinguistic baggage.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>People embraced them and adopted them. <\/p>\n<p>GEO is no different. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"pronunciation-isnt-a-dealbreaker\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pronunciation_isnt_a_dealbreaker\"><\/span>Pronunciation isn\u2019t a dealbreaker<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The argument that nobody will say \u201cG-E-O\u201d just doesn\u2019t hold. <\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been to conferences and heard it mentioned. I\u2019ve heard it in meetings. <\/p>\n<p>Nobody has a problem saying the letter G-E-O in succession. Just like they can easily say S-E-O. <\/p>\n<p>C\u2019mon. It\u2019s a one-letter difference. If I showed my 4-year-old daughter those three letters, she could say them.<\/p>\n<p>We have plenty of initialisms and acronyms that aren\u2019t \u201cperfect.\u201d CTR. CRO. ASO. CWV (you know, LCP, INP, and CLS). GSC. <\/p>\n<p>GEO is, if nothing else, more memorable than many of those. <\/p>\n<p>GEO can be said as \u201cgee-oh\u201d or \u201cG-E-O.\u201d Both work. Neither is a barrier to adoption.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"search-engines-catch-up-to-language\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Search_engines_catch_up_to_language\"><\/span>Search engines catch up to language<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The idea that GEO can\u2019t compete with entrenched meanings in Google or LLM training data is shortsighted. <\/p>\n<p>Comparing GEO to \u201cFBI = For Better Indexing\u201d is a false equivalence. The FBI is one of the most globally recognized initialism in existence. That\u2019s not GEO\u2019s situation.<\/p>\n<p>Think about content marketing. In the early 2010s, hardly anyone was using the term. <\/p>\n<p>By the mid-2010s, it wasn\u2019t just mainstream \u2013 it had conferences, software, dedicated teams, and entire agencies built around it.<\/p>\n<p>Search intent shifted. Authority shifted. Google caught up to the way the community was using the language.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s exactly how new terms gain traction. <\/p>\n<p>Authority and intent aren\u2019t fixed permanently; they evolve as people adopt and reinforce new concepts. <\/p>\n<p>GEO is following that same path.<\/p>\n<p>Search engines and LLMs will follow the users if they adopt GEO. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"lets-stop-pretending-seo-is-a-perfect-name\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lets_stop_pretending_SEO_is_a_perfect_name\"><\/span>Let\u2019s stop pretending SEO is a perfect name<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Everyone seems to forget this: Search Engine Optimization is itself a pretty dumb name. <\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re not actually \u201coptimizing search engines.\u201d We\u2019re optimizing content <strong>for<\/strong> search engines. <\/p>\n<p>SEO easily could have been \u201cContent Optimization for Search Engines\u201d (COSE?) or something equally clunky.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and by the way, SEO isn\u2019t even an acronym. It\u2019s an <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.grammarly.com\/commonly-confused-words\/acronym-vs-initialism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">initialism<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t say \u201csee-oh\u201d \u2014 you say the letters: S-E-O. Same will be true for G-E-O.<\/p>\n<p>So why hold GEO to some linguistic purity standard? <\/p>\n<p>GEO is just as \u201cbad\u201d or just as \u201cgood\u201d as SEO. <\/p>\n<p>And like SEO, GEO will stick if it\u2019s useful.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"geo-is-a-chance-to-reframe-seos-reputation\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"GEO_is_a_chance_to_reframe_SEOs_reputation\"><\/span>GEO is a chance to reframe SEO\u2019s reputation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s be honest: SEO as a discipline has always been undervalued and misunderstood. <\/p>\n<p>Externally, it\u2019s often reduced to clich\u00e9s about \u201cgaming Google\u201d or \u201ckeyword stuffing,\u201d while those of us inside the industry know the reality \u2013 that SEO drives visibility, revenue, and long-term growth for brands and businesses of all sizes.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why GEO matters. It\u2019s not just about adapting to AI-driven search. It\u2019s a chance to rebrand our field for the next era, to shed some of the baggage SEO has carried for two decades. <\/p>\n<p>GEO signals that optimization isn\u2019t static. It evolves with technology \u2013 and so does the value of the people doing it.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, GEO isn\u2019t just a new initialism. It\u2019s a fresh opportunity to get the recognition this discipline deserves.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"geo-isnt-going-away\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"GEO_isnt_going_away\"><\/span>GEO isn\u2019t going away<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Generative Engine Optimization is an attempt to describe the reality of how search is changing. <\/p>\n<p>Is it a perfect name? No. But again, neither was SEO.<\/p>\n<p>What GEO tries to do is define the real shift in optimization practice as AI-driven search reshapes discovery.<\/p>\n<p>The initialism is already in circulation in academia and the marketing industry. Communities are adopting it. Again, the language will follow the people.<\/p>\n<p>The choice isn\u2019t whether GEO will \u201chappen.\u201d It already has. <\/p>\n<p>The only choice is whether you want to be ahead of the curve or play catch-up.<\/p>\n<p>First, they ignored GEO. Then they laughed at GEO. Now they\u2019re fighting GEO. Maybe this means GEO will indeed win? <\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Dig deeper.
