“#’Tenet’ box office stumble has Hollywood rethinking movie release schedule<\/strong>”

\n The disastrous debut of Warner Bros\u2019 spy thriller \u201cTenet\u201d at movie theaters has Hollywood studios fingering the panic button.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTenet\u201d \u2014 a $200 million Christopher Nolan production which has amassed less than $30 million in ticket sales since it hit US theaters on Sept. 3 \u2014 has given Tinseltown a wakeup call, with studios grapp<\/a>ling with whether to release their remaining blockbusters this year or hold them until the coronavirus crisis wanes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cStudios are making decisions based on what\u2019s happening with \u2018Tenet,\u2019\u201d said MKM partners analyst Eric Handler. \u201cWhat I think you\u2019re going to see is more movies<\/a> get pushed back until we see major markets reopen again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Last week, Warner Bros. postponed \u201cWonder Woman 1984,\u201d starring Gal Gadot, to Christmas Day from Oct. 2, and Universal pushed \u201cCandyman\u201d to an undetermined date next year from Oct. 16. There\u2019s also buzz that Disney will delay the Nov. 6 release of its Marvel movie \u201cBlack Widow,\u201d starring Scarlett Johansson, as well as Pixar adventure \u201cSoul\u201d on Nov. 20. Disney did not comment on the speculation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf \u2018Black Widow\u2019 moves, we really don\u2019t have a big film for quite a while,\u201d Handler said. \u201cThere\u2019s the James Bond \u2018No Time to Die\u2019 film at Thanksgiving, then \u2018Dune\u2019 [on Dec. 18] and \u2018Wonder Woman.\u2019 We could have a couple big-event films but in terms of depth that\u2019s it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The analyst said the push back of films is setting up a circular problem, in which movie theaters \u201cwant customers to show up but they won\u2019t show up if there\u2019s no new movies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The reluctance to return to theaters is due in large part to the unpredictable nature of the coronavirus pandemic, which caused cinemas to go dark in the US for five months.<\/span><\/p>\n

But \u201cTenet,\u201d which pre-pandemic was projected to garner around $850 million in global ticket sales, was at least expected to jolt the industry back to life. Instead, it arrived at the box office with a whimper, grossing $178 million internationally, and $29.5 million in North America, bringing its current global box office tally to $207 million, Box Office Mojo said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Critics blamed the tepid results on the fact that only 60 percent, or 3,500 of North America\u2019s 6,000 theaters are open. Also adding to the sales woes is the fact that major markets like New York and Los Angeles remain closed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Still, the \u201cTenet\u201d debacle has sent shockwaves through Hollywood. At a Bank of America investors conference last week, Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra jolted insiders with what looked like a thinly veiled reference to the flop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we won\u2019t want to do is make the mistake of putting a very, very expensive $200 million movie on the market unless we\u2019re sure theaters are open and operating at a significant capacity,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Comscore media<\/a> analyst Paul Dergarabedian said Hollywood will have to be patient for the return of theatergoers, predicting that 2021 will be an important year for the recovery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that movie theaters are just doing business, that is a good sign,\u201d the analyst said. <\/span>\u201cRight now, I just think it\u2019s a win that people want to go back. It\u2019s a daunting thing to go back indoors and into those venues after six months.\u201d<\/span>\n <\/div>\n
