In theory, RSL gives websites leverage to demand compensation when AI companies scrape and train on their data.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why we care.<\/strong> Until now, publishers could only block or allow bots via robots.txt. RSL upgrades that model, letting publishers embed licensing and royalty terms directly into robots.txt files, online books, videos, and datasets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How it works<\/strong>. Publishers can set sub<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ion, pay-per-crawl, or pay-per-inference fees (compensation when an AI uses their content in responses).<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bots for non-training purposes (like search indexing or archiving) can crawl as usual.<\/li>\n<li>RSL relies on AI companies\u2019 cooperation. Without buy-in, enforcement will be a challenge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The big picture<\/strong>. The RSL Collective, led by RSS co-creator Eckart Walther and former Ask.com CEO Doug Leeds, is pushing the standard.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They see it as a scalable business model for the web, modeled after rights groups like ASCAP in music.<\/li>\n<li>Fastly is working with RSL to build \u201cgatekeeper\u201d tech that can admit or block bots based on licensing compliance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Supporters<\/strong>. Brands that are supporting RSL include: <\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reddit<\/li>\n<li>Quora<\/li>\n<li>Yahoo<\/li>\n<li>Medium<\/li>\n<li>Adweek<\/li>\n<li>Fastly<\/li>\n<li>Internet Brands<\/li>\n<li>The MIT Press<\/li>\n<li>O\u2019Reilly<\/li>\n<li>People Inc.<\/li>\n<li>wikiHow<\/li>\n<li>Ziff Davis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Between the lines.<\/strong> Some big media players (e.g., The New York Times, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> Corp, Vox Media) have cut direct licensing deals with AI firms. But RSL aims to simplify the process for <em>any<\/em> publisher, big or small.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The catch<\/strong>. AI model builders have a history of ignoring robots.txt. Without enforcement teeth, RSL\u2019s success hinges on whether major AI players adopt the standard.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not the first. <\/strong>Cloudflare, which powers about 20% of the internet, is also cracking down on AI bots.
