\n\tStephen Colbert pulled out all the stops in defending his late-night competitor and friend Jimmy Kimmel on Thursday. That included pulling out his old Comedy Central character: Stephen Colbert the political pundit and host of The Colbert Report<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tCue the bald eagle screech.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHello, nation,\u201d Colbert said in character. \u201cDaddy\u2019s home.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe faux Colbert jumped right back into his signature segment, \u201cThe Word,\u201d which puts the conservative words coming out of his Republican mouth at odds with contradictory text in a side-chyron. To get us out of this \u201cfree-speech crisis,\u201d Colbert suggests we all just\u2026don\u2019t say anything. And certainly not aloud<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tRegarding the First Amendment, Colbert said, \u201dYou can have your rights just as long as you don\u2019t use them<\/em>.\u201d (Chyron: \u201cLike a gym membership.\u201d)<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cGive up, America. Just give up and stop saying anything that might upset the president,\u201d Colbert concluded. \u201cIf you think that\u2019s a terrible idea, no you don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJimmy Kimmel Live!<\/em>\u00a0was suspended<\/a> after mocking MAGA Republicans for scrambling to distance their own ideologies from those of Charlie Kirk\u2019s alleged murderer, Tyler Robinson. Both sides of the aisle have been playing a game<\/a> of hot potato with Robinson\u2019s perceived political affiliations.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,\u201d Kimmel said.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe joke cost Kimmel at least a few nights of ABC\u2019s airtime \u2014 discussions about whether and when Jimmy Kimmel Live!<\/em> would and could return are still ongoing at the highest levels within The Walt Disney Company, which owns ABC. \n\tColbert still has a talk show \u2014 until next May at least. His guests on Thursday\u2019s show were CNN\u2019s Jake Tapp<\/a>er and\u00a0The New Yorker<\/em>\u00a0editor David Remnick. Both heavily criticized Trump for meddling and Disney for, as Tapper put it, \u201cacquiescing\u201d to power.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the old days, The Colbert Report<\/em>\u2019s lead-in was The Daily Show<\/em>. Well, Jon Stewart is back in that chair \u2014 sometimes \u2014 read here to see how he tackled the Kimmel crisis.
