Halsey<\/strong>, the queen of fearless pop-\u2018n\u2019-poetic chaos, is out here claiming her label is literally not letting her<\/em> make a new album. Yep, you read that right.<\/p>\n

In a recent sit\u2011down with Zane Lowe<\/strong> on App<\/a>le Music<\/strong>, Halsey made a bombshell confession that she \u201ccan\u2019t make an album right now,\u201d because she\u2019s \u201cnot allowed to\u201d by her record label after they apparently felt her latest album The Great Impersonator<\/em> \u201cdidn\u2019t perform the way they thought it was going to.\u201d WHAT?!<\/p>\n

You know Halsey: always pushing boundaries, always raw. In this context, she did that by reminding everyone that The Great Impersonator<\/em> still made quite a splash:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I\u2019m being honest with you, the album sold 100,000 f**king copies first week. That\u2019s a pretty big first week, especially for an artist who hasn\u2019t had a hit in a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

But when her team (aka the label overlords) compared those numbers to her Manic<\/em> era, they were unimpressed, even though she was doing things she\u2019d never done before. Touring success, emotional depth, pushing the envelope. But apparently that\u2019s STILL not enough.<\/p>\n

She explained, referencing her 2020 album Manic<\/em> in doing so:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe tour is the highest-selling tour of my entire career, but they want Manic<\/em> numbers from me. Everyone wants Manic<\/em> numbers from me. I can\u2019t do that every single time. It should be good enough that I do it once in a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

She also pointed out that what would be considered success<\/em> for most artists \u2014 100,000 in week one with no radio hit and minimal support \u2014 is being labeled a failure<\/em> in her case. Lowe seemingly agreed with Halsey, saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt should be good enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Before she quickly added:<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it\u2019s not. What would be considered a success for most artists, a success story, 100,000 albums in the first week, in an era when we don\u2019t sell physical music, okay, with no radio hit, nothing. But it\u2019s a failure \u2026 in the context of the kind of success that I\u2019ve had previously.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Ugh.<\/p>\n

And she added:<\/p>\n

\u201cBut if my record comes out with 100,000 copies first week \u2014 with no radio play, no real support \u2014 and the comparison is, \u2018Why isn\u2019t she doing Taylor Swift numbers?\u2019 Are you f**king kidding me? I made an experimental concept album about how I almost f**king died. I\u2019m not gonna do those numbers, but I\u2019m doing pretty damn good. Those are strong numbers. It\u2019s still in the top 10 of female artist first weeks. But it\u2019s not good enough because it\u2019s not the pop star I once was.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

But don\u2019t think she\u2019s alone in this. She made sure to give lots of love to her fans who have stuck by her through it all:<\/p>\n

\u201cI love them. God bless them, because they\u2019re the only reason that I\u2019m even able to make anything at all, that I can sell that many copies of an experimental concept album about death.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
