three nearly identical pages: one with strong schema, one with poor schema, and one with none.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Only the page with well-implemented schema <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eared in an AI Overview and achieved the best organic ranking.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The results suggest that schema quality \u2013 not just its presence \u2013 may play a role in AI Overview visibility.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"schema-ai-overviews-and-the-need-for-proof\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Schema_AI_Overviews_and_the_need_for_proof\"><\/span>Schema, AI Overviews, and the need for proof<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>AI Overview visibility is becoming increasingly important to businesses.<\/p>\n<p>One debate within the SEO community has stood out: Does adding schema improve the chances of being cited in an AI Overview?<\/p>\n<p>Schema was created to make webpages more machine-readable, and it has even been shown to help large language models \u2013 like Microsoft\u2019s \u2013 better interpret content freshness.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That makes it tempting to assume schema is a best practice for AI visibility.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, AI Overviews are the result of complex and layered processes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s difficult to draw firm conclusions from logic alone or from limited glimpses into one part of a model\u2019s behavior.<\/p>\n<p>That uncertainty is what motivated us to run a controlled experiment.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In earlier work, Molly analyzed 100 healthcare sites and found a slight correlation between schema use and AI Overview visibility. But the correlation was not statistically significant, and the analysis had two limitations: it didn\u2019t assess the quality of the schema, and because it wasn\u2019t an experiment, site differences in content, structure, and audience couldn\u2019t be controlled.<\/li>\n<li>At the same time, Benjamin\u2019s experiments showed that ChatGPT retrieved information more thoroughly and accurately from pages with structured data. Those findings pointed to schema\u2019s role in AI visibility, but they didn\u2019t address Google\u2019s AI Overviews.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With those perspectives in mind, we decided to collaborate on a test that would build on Molly\u2019s earlier analysis and extend Benjamin\u2019s experiments into Google Search \u2013 focusing directly on whether schema quality plays a role in AI Overview visibility.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Dig deeper: AI visibility: An execution problem in the making<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-setup-three-sites-three-schema-approaches\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_setup_Three_sites_three_schema_approaches\"><\/span>The setup: Three sites, three schema approaches<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We built three single-page sites to compare schema directly:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One with well-implemented schema.<\/li>\n<li>One with poorly implemented schema.<\/li>\n<li>One with none.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Aside from schema, the pages were kept as similar as possible, with keywords chosen to match in difficulty and search volume.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After publishing, we submitted all three for indexing to see whether they would rank \u2013 and, more importantly, whether any would appear in an AI Overview.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START INLINE FORM --><\/p>\n<p><!-- END INLINE FORM --><\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-color has-css-opacity has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background\">\n<h2 id=\"the-result-only-the-page-with-wellimplemented-schema-appeared-in-an-ai-overview\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_result_Only_the_page_with_well-implemented_schema_appeared_in_an_AI_Overview\"><\/span>The result: Only the page with well-implemented schema appeared in an AI Overview<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The page with well-implemented schema was the only one to appear in an AI Overview.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It also ranked for six keywords in traditional search, reaching as high as Position 3.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rank 3 was the highest conventional search rank achieved by any page in our experiment, and it was also the query that triggered the AI Overview appearance.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"862\" http: alt=\"Google AI Overviews - data pool vs data lake\" class=\"wp-image-462356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2025\/09\/Google-AI-Overviews-data-pool-vs-data-lake.png 1600w, https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2025\/09\/Google-AI-Overviews-data-pool-vs-data-lake-768x414.png 768w, https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2025\/09\/Google-AI-Overviews-data-pool-vs-data-lake-1536x828.png 1536w\" data-lazy-sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" src=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2025\/09\/Google-AI-Overviews-data-pool-vs-data-lake.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"862\" src=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2025\/09\/Google-AI-Overviews-data-pool-vs-data-lake.png\" alt=\"Google AI Overviews - data pool vs data lake\" class=\"wp-image-462356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2025\/09\/Google-AI-Overviews-data-pool-vs-data-lake.png 1600w, https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2025\/09\/Google-AI-Overviews-data-pool-vs-data-lake-768x414.png 768w, https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2025\/09\/Google-AI-Overviews-data-pool-vs-data-lake-1536x828.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\"><\/figure>\n<p>The page with poorly implemented schema ranked for 10 keywords and peaked at Position 8, but none of its queries surfaced in an AI Overview.<\/p>\n<p>The page with no schema was crawled by Google within minutes of the others, but was not indexed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Without indexing, it didn\u2019t rank for any keywords and could not appear in AI Overviews.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"methodology-how-we-controlled-for-variables-and-defined-good-schema\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Methodology_How_we_controlled_for_variables_and_defined_%E2%80%98good_schema\"><\/span>Methodology: How we controlled for variables and defined \u2018good schema\u2019<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To isolate schema as the variable, we kept everything else about the test pages as consistent as possible \u2013 from keyword choice to site setup.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-keyword-selection\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Keyword_selection\"><\/span>Keyword selection<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We used Ahrefs to choose three keywords with identical metrics. Each returned an AI Overview at the time of selection:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cHow much does a marketing team cost.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhat are common elements in the promotional mix.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cData pool vs. data lake.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Metrics (Ahrefs)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keyword difficulty: 3<\/li>\n<li>Monthly search volume: 60<\/li>\n<li>Traffic potential: 20<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We also chose keywords that were qualitatively similar and within the same <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> industry (marketing\/martech).<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-site-build-controls\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Site_build_controls\"><\/span>Site build controls<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>All three were single-page sites deployed on Vercel, with the following constraints applied consistently:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No JavaScript.<\/li>\n<li>No custom domain name or homepage.<\/li>\n<li>No sitemap.<\/li>\n<li>No robots.txt file.<\/li>\n<li>No canonical tags.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-schema-treatments\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Schema_treatments\"><\/span>Schema treatments<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>To create a page that exemplified a solid implementation of schema best practices, we included:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Complete <code>Article<\/code> schema with all required fields.<\/li>\n<li><code>FAQ<\/code> schema for common questions.<\/li>\n<li>Breadcrumb navigation schema.<\/li>\n<li>Proper date formatting.<\/li>\n<li>Author and publisher information.<\/li>\n<li>Educational level and audience targeting.<\/li>\n<li>Related topics and mentions.<\/li>\n<li>Word count and reading time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We deliberately introduced errors into the poor schema page, including:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Incomplete <code>Article<\/code> schema (missing required fields).<\/li>\n<li>No <code>FAQ<\/code> schema despite having FAQ-like content.<\/li>\n<li>Missing breadcrumb navigation schema.<\/li>\n<li>Incorrect date format.<\/li>\n<li>Missing essential properties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The third site was built without any schema at all.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All three sites were submitted to Google on Aug. 29 and crawled the same night.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"interpreting-the-results-promising-but-inconclusive\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Interpreting_the_results_Promising_but_inconclusive\"><\/span>Interpreting the results: Promising, but inconclusive<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We don\u2019t consider these results to be absolute proof that well-implemented schema plays a role in AI Overview presence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, the story is clear: the page with well-implemented schema was the winner in our small, carefully controlled test. It achieved the best organic rank and was the only page to appear in an AI Overview.<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t see any obvious alternative explanation for why this happened, either.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cno schema\u201d page had the lowest word count of the three pages, but word count shouldn\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"whats-next\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_next\"><\/span>What\u2019s next<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There\u2019s still more to do.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Unseen variables could have muddied the waters, and there\u2019s always the possibility that our results were simply a coin-flip-style fluke of the Google algorithm.<\/p>\n<p>As a follow-up, we plan to de-index the pages, create new pages with identical content, and then swap the schema.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We want to see if putting schema on the \u201cno schema\u201d page gets it indexed and ranked.
