\n Dr. Ian Smith returns to \u201cThe Doctors\u201d \u2014 this time as the revamped show\u2019s solo host for its 13th season premiering Monday (8 a.m.) on WLNY\/Ch. 55.<\/p>\n

Smith, a physician and best-selling author, co-hosted \u201cThe Doctors\u201d during its sixth season (2014-15) and has forged ahead with his TV and writing career; his newest book, \u201cThe Unspoken<\/a>\u201d \u2014 a fictional private-eye mystery out Oct. 1 \u2014 is already #1 on Kindle.<\/p>\n

So Smith says he was surprised when he got the call on a Friday afternoon asking him if he wanted to return to \u201cThe Doctors,\u201d which moved from LA to a studio in Stamford, Ct. for its new season \u2014 and counts Phil \u201cDr. Phil\u201d McGraw and his son, Jay McGraw, among its executive producers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was in my garden weeding on my knees, sweaty and dirty, when a number I didn\u2019t recognize came up on my cell phone,\u201d says Smith, 51, who lives in Chicago.\u00a0 \u201cIt turned out it was one of the executive producers of \u2018The Doctors.\u2019 We hadn\u2019t spoken in a long time and she said, \u2018We\u2019re going to change the show around, reformat it, and we want different leadership on the air. Are you willing to do it?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cBy Monday we were talking about a deal. It happ<\/a>ened very quickly and unexpectedly,\u201d he says. \u201cSometimes things happen when you don\u2019t expect it.\u201d<\/p>\n

This season\u2019s theme, \u201cTake Your Power Back,\u201d is an umbrella mantra of sorts for how the pandemic has impact everyone,\u201d Smith says.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is such an important season \u2014 perhaps the most important season in the show\u2019s history,\u201d he says. \u201cWe won\u2019t be exclusively covering just the Xs and Os of medicine like the latest surgical procedure or dermatological secret. That\u2019s our bread-and-butter, of course, and we\u2019ll still be talking about that, but \u2026 we\u2019re also expanding to cover wellness \u2014 mental health, spirituality \u2014 and finding topics that relate to our viewers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re doing a book club [encompassing] all types of books and we\u2019re doing a segment I created called \u2018The Pivot,\u2019 where we\u2019re talking to people with interesting stories and how they pivoted during COVID in their personal and professional lives,\u201d he says. \u201cWe\u2019ll have COVID-related segments on how to date, how to parent, how people can cook on a budget and about financial health and literacy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re also going to have musicians on the show,\u201d he says. \u201cMusic is medicine and [musicians] will share their experiences and sing to us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smith will host \u201cThe Doctors\u201d in the studio and will interview guest remotely via Zoom.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m in the studio by myself and the production staff is smaller than it\u2019s been in past seasons,\u201d he says. \u201cWe have to be more creative and there\u2019s a lot of technology<\/a> to deal with and it doesn\u2019t always go smoothly. My days will be a little longer than they would be with a live audience.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to inspire, challenge and have some fun,\u201d he says. \u201cPeople need to laugh a little more.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
