\n President Trump said he doesn\u2019t want ByteDance to be TikTok\u2019s majority owner under the Chinese tech giant\u2019s proposed partnership with Oracle.<\/p>\n

Reports this week have indicated ByteDance wants a majority stake in a new US-based company set up to run TikTok\u2019s global business \u2014 a proposal Trump said he \u201cconceptually\u201d didn\u2019t like.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf that\u2019s the case, I\u2019m not going to be happ<\/a>y with that \u2014 assuming that ByteDance is China, which I think it probably is,\u201d the president said at a Wednesday news conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Trump administration officials are reviewing Beijing-based ByteDance\u2019s proposal to make American software giant Oracle its technology<\/a> partner in the US, a deal struck to prevent Trump from banning the popular short-video app.<\/p>\n

The proposal announced Monday would let Oracle review TikTok\u2019s source code<\/a> to make sure China\u2019s government could not access its data \u2014 as American officials fear \u2014 but the California-based company would only get a minority stake in TikTok Global, a new US-based firm that would be a unit of ByteDance, according to The Wall Street Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Trump said he expected to be briefed on the deal Thursday, adding that he had not been told ByteDance would retain majority ownership of TikTok. The app could be banned as soon as Sunday under an order Trump issued last month if the Oracle partnership is not approved.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not prepared to sign off on anything,\u201d Trump said Wednesday. \u201cI have to see the deal. We need security, especially after what we\u2019ve seen with respect to China and what\u2019s going on.\u201d<\/p>\n

ByteDance said Thursday that China\u2019s government would have to approve its proposed partnership with Oracle, adding another hurdle for the deal to clear. Beijing officials also threw a wrench into ByteDance\u2019s negotiations last month with new export restrictions that would likely affect TikTok\u2019s signature algorithm that feeds users videos based on their preferences.<\/p>\n

ByteDance did not immedia<\/a>tely respond to a request for comment on Trump\u2019s remarks. Oracle shares were down about 0.9 percent in premarket trading Thursday at $59.90 as of 7:06 a.m.<\/span><\/p>\n
