\n A graduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has apologized and resigned from their teaching job and worker\u2019s union leadership position after years of embracing \u201clies\u201d about their racial identity.<\/p>\n

CV Vitolo-Haddad, who uses the non-binary pronouns \u201cthey\u201d and \u201cthem,\u201d admitted that they are actually Southern Italian and Sicilian \u2014 not black or Latino, which are both labels they accepted when peers allegedly assumed they were a person of color.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen asked if I identify as black, my answer should have always been \u2018No,\u2019\u2009\u201d Vitolo-Haddad wrote Sept. 8<\/a> in the second of two confessions on Medium. \u201cThere were three separate instances I said otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have let guesses about my ancestry become answers I wanted but couldn\u2019t prove,\u201d Vitolo-Haddad previously said<\/a> in an apology published Sept. 6 on Medium. \u201cI have let people make assumptions when I should have corrected them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018I take full responsibility for spreading these lies and am deeply sorry.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In the second missive, Vitolo-Haddad added, \u201cI want to apologize for ever taking lies about Cuban roots at face value, and for subsequently attaching myself to people\u2019s perceptions of me as though it would provide answers where there are none.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vitolo-Haddad, who has railed<\/a> against conservatives\u2019 views about race, declined an interview with the Wisconsin State Journal, which first reported the story on Saturday. However, in a series<\/a> of text messages, Vitolo-Haddad told reporters<\/a>, \u201cI repeated things I heard growing up from my family that I now know to be lies. I am so sorry. I take full responsibility for spreading these lies and am deeply sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n
