“#Jeffrey Goldberg says anonymous sources are ‘not good enough’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic and the journalist responsible for the \u201cbombshell\u201d report that President Trump disparaged America\u2019s war dead, conceded that anonymous sources were \u201cnot good enough\u201d in reporting such as his.<\/p>\n

\u201cI share that view that it\u2019s not good enough. But, you know, like other reporters, I\u2019m always balancing out the moral ambiguities and complications after anonymous sourcing with the public\u2019s right to know,\u201d Goldberg said during a Monday evening interview on MSNBC\u2019s \u201cAll In with Chris Hayes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hayes raised the issue of using unnamed sources with Goldberg while discussing his most recent article, in which he relied on four anonymous accounts.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had two reactions when I read the piece. One was, \u2018Okay, why didn\u2019t you tell us this before? And why not be on the record, whoever you are out there?\u2019 I mean, this is \u2014 what you are saying here is very serious stuff. It is an incredible condemnation of the president\u2019s character and just his humanity, obviously,\u201d Hayes said before asking Goldberg what his response was.<\/p>\n

Goldberg began his answer by mentioning that he knew of other reporters who were \u201cpushing various people to say what\u2019s on their minds.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think there is a couple of things. There is this idea of a code that, you know, you don\u2019t interfere. I think people are torn. On one hand they don\u2019t want to interfere in democratic electoral processes,\u201d Goldberg offered as one theory for why sources choose to stay anonymous.<\/p>\n

The Atlantic\u2019s editor-in-chief then turned the blame on the current commander-in-chief, saying Trump had set a tone of fear in the nation\u2019s capital against speaking out about his alleged misdeeds.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn the other hand, you are talking about a president who is unlike anything they have ever experienced. I think there is also fear. I think \u2014 and we see this across the board in Donald Trump\u2019s Washington \u2014 there is a fear on a kind of a superficial level of a Twitter mob. There is also real fear of personal safety, fear for your family, fear for what you put everybody around you through if you started talking about this sort of thing,\u201d he told the MSNBC host.<\/p>\n

Goldberg then conceded that questions about anonymous sources were \u201creasonable\u201d to raise, adding that he thought it was fine to \u201cask why people who have had direct exposure to Donald Trump, who know what Donald Trump has said, who know what Donald Trump has done, but won\u2019t simply come out and say it.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
