Real rap, Thugger said, was \u201cletting people in, letting people know what you go through. Let them know that you the same.\u201d Contrast that with his reasoning for wearing a mask during <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/young-thug-speaks-about-his-new-album-uy-scuti-and-life-after-jail\">an interview with <i>GQ<\/i><\/a> to discuss <i>Uy Scuti<\/i>, his new album named for a distant star. \u201cI don\u2019t feel like people should see me\u2026 I just feel like I\u2019m out of this world.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            This contradiction is nothing new in rap, and its legends are the ones who are able to reconcile the human heart and the alien ambition without undermining either dimension. Thug is indisputably one of hip-hop\u2019s legends, but the magic he\u2019s displayed in the past only <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears in fits and starts on <i>Uy Scuti<\/i>. It\u2019s an album that\u2019s caught in its own head, for better or worse. \n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-274474\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Young Thug - Money On Money (feat. From May 2022, he spent two-and-a-half years of his life in jail on trial in Atlanta for the RICO case that swept up his crew, YSL, painted by the prosecution as a deadly street gang roaming the capital. Some defendants, like his close friend and collaborator Gunna, took plea bargains and many onlookers, including Thug, painted them as rats for it. But Thug endured. Against all odds, the case fell apart and he was released in October 2024 on a deal that included 15 years probation and restrictions on returning to Atlanta. Since then, he\u2019s only released new songs sparingly and to little fanfare. What got the biggest attention was the trove of jailhouse discussions between Thug and investigators, leaked mere weeks before <i>Uy Scuti<\/i>\u2019s release. Soon, he was the one being labeled only a rat but a hypocrite in the eyes of the rap internet.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            This sort of debate was new, uneasy footing for Thug after a year spent provoking every tenant of hip-hop expression, from fashion to flow. As commenters gossiped about his sexuality, he <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/media.gq.com\/photos\/57c0a1e0ff4e739d495a57b2\/master\/pass\/jeffery2.jpg\">wore a dress on the cover of his 2016 mixtape <i>Jeffrey<\/i><\/a> and paid tribute to Prince after his passing. When his lacey, impressionistic delivery was accused of corrupting rap, he made <i>Barter 6<\/i>. Thug has thrived as an underdog, but being accused of snitching has not inspired a similar wellspring of creativity. \n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-274473\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Young Thug - Fucking Told U [Official Video]\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Uz7bt5iolRg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('274473');\n<\/script><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-274469\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Like too many major label rap releases, there\u2019s little holding these 21 tracks together. Unlike most, though, you can see the skeleton of what could have been: a tribute to the music of Atlanta, the city Thug helped define in which he can no longer roam freely. Most of the songs are produced by Thug\u2019s day-one producers like London On Da Track, Southside, and Wheezy; there are moments when Thug gets his old flows back, and it sounds glorious: \u201cWhaddup Jesus,\u201d a collaboration with his onetime-nemesis YFN Lucci, both harkens back to his Rich Gang days and sounds like a song he\u2019s been waiting his entire career to make. \u201cRIP Big &amp; Mack\u201d lopes with a similar throwback to Thug&#8217;s 2014-era sound and makes the wise decision to give T.I. roughly a minute at the end of the song to just talk his shit.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            Unfortunately, <i>Uy Scuti<\/i> is too long, too tapped into playlists, and \u2014 tragically, since it\u2019s a Young Thug album \u2014 not weird enough (that album cover was a red herring). \u201cWhoopty Doo\u201d sounds like a half-forgotten song from the <i>So Much Fun<\/i> era, and Thug\u2019s lavish brags are so lazy that his half-hearted exclamations of the track\u2019s title are unintentionally perfect fits. \u201cYuck\u201d\u2019s channeling of Jeezy-era Atlanta trap could have been compelling, but it all feels a bit paint-by-numbers, and Ken Carson really stinks up the place with his verse: \u201cMy life&#8217;s so unrated, I swear this shit a movie \/ It&#8217;s made by A24, yo&#8217; shit went to Tubi,\u201d he raps through Auto-Tune set to Playboi Carti mode.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-274472\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Young Thug - Miss My Dogs [Official Video]\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/a1OuJ5QbYSc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('274472');\n<\/script><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-274470\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            With a greater sense of adventure and a bit of fine-tuning, <i>Uy Scuti<\/i> could have been the Thug version of Carti\u2019s <i>Music<\/i>, another overstuffed project but one that was pushed to moderate success by its maximalism. It\u2019s not hard to imagine a version of <i>Uy Scuti<\/i> that could\u2019ve exceeded that project thanks to the raw emotion he brings on songs like the brilliant, psychedelic Mariah The Scientist duet \u201cDreams Rarely Do Come True\u201d and \u201cMiss My Dogs.\u201d On the latter, Thug defiantly responds to the accusations over a syrupy, soulful beat and apologizes to those hurt by the recorded calls. It\u2019s pain rap at its most candid, Thug\u2019s voice heavy with genuine contrition.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Often though, that emotion is left unrefined by puzzling creative decisions. The dire lyrics of \u201cBlaming Jesus\u201d demand something other than its cookie-cutter, Drake-core bounce beat, and the depth he digs on his verses for \u201cOn The <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>\u201d is undermined by a misplaced (but still fire) Cardi B feature.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <i>Uy Scuti<\/i> gives you enough to feel good about where Thug is going if you don\u2019t really care about the politics of the rap internet though it\u2019s clear that Thug does on a level that\u2019s now hamstringing his music. As debates over what \u201creal\u201d means turn into bad faith frenzies between stan accounts, it\u2019s a shame to see Thug mired in it, because he always seemed impervious to it. I remember after our interview concluded six years ago, as I left the room, I saw his entourage bring in half a dozen Pelican cases and two studio speakers. It was late and everyone was tired but Thug wanted to keep making music in a city he was never supposed to know existed, let alone visit as an esteemed guest. It felt like he couldn\u2019t do it any other way.
