See how it stacks up against Performance Max and when it can actually deliver results.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"bialty-container\">\n<p>Every few months, Google launches a new feature \u2013 and reactions usually split into two extremes: either it\u2019s a welcome but overdue correction or a sign of PPC end times.<\/p>\n<p>AI Max is no exception. Some advertisers love what it represents and how it\u2019s delivered, while others are ready to dismiss it altogether.<\/p>\n<p>As with most things, the reality falls somewhere in between. Instead of speculating on what-ifs, I\u2019ll share what I\u2019ve seen after testing AI Max for 30+ days across multiple accounts.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"googles-new-ai-max-feature-explained\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Googles_new_AI_Max_feature_explained\"><\/span>Google\u2019s new AI Max feature explained<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>AI Max is an optional toggle for your Search campaigns that opens you up to what Google calls \u201cthe full potential of Google Search.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It allows Google to go beyond keyword targeting and show your ads to people that its machine learning algorithms feel might soon need what you\u2019re offering.<\/p>\n<p>Think of how broad match keywords go beyond what people are searching for in the moment to what they might search for in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Now expand that principle further past query-based targeting entirely to cover:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Past search history.<\/li>\n<li>Demographic and behavioral attributes.<\/li>\n<li>Historical search intent.<\/li>\n<li>All the other user measurements Google has access to, but that we can\u2019t see.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Plus, AI Max will also show your ads for keywords that it determines might be a fit based on the content of your website and landing pages.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">DSA vs PMax vs AI Max \u2014 Sooooo how exactly does AI Max differ from PMax and DSA?<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a quick rundown.<\/p>\n<p>\u25ba Performance Max<br \/>Targets all Google channels and functions as a standalone campaign. Keyword control is minimal.<\/p>\n<p>\u25ba Dynamic Search Ads (DSA)<br \/>The oldest of the three. This means that you can only use these features if you are using AI Max.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t see a problem here. This isn\u2019t Performance Max, where everything is combined into one. <\/p>\n<p>You should already be running a standalone Search campaign for your branded terms.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"key-differences-between-ai-max-and-performance-max\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Key_differences_between_AI_Max_and_Performance_Max\"><\/span>Key differences between AI Max and Performance Max<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The ability to run your Search campaigns with or without AI Max enabled separates it from Performance Max \u2013 which is its own campaign type covering a variety of ad inventories, including Shopping, Display, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube<\/a>, and Gmail.<\/p>\n<p>Still, they\u2019re both algorithm-driven, so I think about them in similar ways.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Spam is likely to be heavy when using form submissions unless there\u2019s a filter to minimize that, so I prefer to use them for calls only. Conversely, this is also part of what makes AI Max a no-brainer for ecommerce, which is less prone to spam.<\/li>\n<li>They\u2019re both prone to matching with some random queries that may not be great for lead quality, so even legitimate inquiries from real people might be unqualified and looking for something else due to the nature of query matching.<\/li>\n<li>Overall, I don\u2019t really want to use them for lead-gen unless I have qualified data coming through and passing back into Google through offline conversion imports.<\/li>\n<li>Unlike DSAs, which pull ad copy directly from your landing pages, AI Max will come up with new copy using its algorithm, similar to how Performance Max auto-generates creative assets.<\/li>\n<li>You can also exclude Search Partners and Display entirely, unlike Performance Max. This added bit of control is very welcome.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-use-and-avoid-ai-max-in-your-search-campaigns\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_use_and_avoid_AI_Max_in_your_Search_campaigns\"><\/span>When to use and avoid AI Max in your Search campaigns<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While tools like AI Max can amplify the work and results of an experienced PPC manager, not every account is in the right position to benefit from them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here are some examples of scenarios where it may or may not be wise to use AI Max.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For ecommerce, AI Max is worth testing as a source of truly incremental revenue. At worst, you may spend a bit extra during the first month of testing and get no tangible results, but you won\u2019t lose resources beyond those wasted CPCs.<\/li>\n<li>For lead gen, the only time I\u2019d consider AI Max is if you\u2019re passing back CRM data on qualified or closed leads. In this scenario, where you\u2019re keeping a close eye on the two-way exchange of user data, it can also be quite helpful.<\/li>\n<li>Mainstream niches and anything with large search volumes (e.g., home decor, consumer goods) might benefit from AI Max targeting expanded opportunities.<\/li>\n<li>New accounts without historical conversion data should avoid AI Max until they\u2019ve met Google\u2019s manual conversion threshold (30 conversions a month) for at least a few months.<\/li>\n<li>Small accounts spending up to a few thousand dollars a month should stabilize manual demand capture before turning on any algorithmic features.<\/li>\n<li>Regulated industries like pharmaceuticals might need to play it safe with who sees their ads and how those ads show up. While there\u2019s not a lot of volume, performance is better than conventional keyword targeting.<\/p>\n<p>This is why I say it\u2019s a no-brainer to test for ecommerce.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>My client now has an extra $52,000 in revenue that we may or may not have generated without AI Max.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To expand that thinking to Google\u2019s algorithmic campaigns in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>, that incremental boost may have come from Performance Max if I hadn\u2019t run Search.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"gaps-in-ai-max-where-does-the-human-touch-play-a-role\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Gaps_in_AI_Max_Where_does_the_human_touch_play_a_role\"><\/span>Gaps in AI Max: Where does the human touch play a role<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To think of AI Max as either a PPC apocalypse or search on autopilot is completely the wrong mindset.<\/p>\n<p>First, it\u2019s a 100% optional setting and doesn\u2019t absorb existing campaigns like Performance Max did. So, if you\u2019re really set against AI Max, just don\u2019t use it.<\/p>\n<p>Second, worrying that AI Max is another step toward fully automated Google Ads doesn\u2019t benefit anyone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t panic yourself out of a job, because human marketers are still needed to:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make smart decisions around fundamentals like strategy, audiences, and messaging.<\/li>\n<li>Write RSAs that earn clicks by meeting search intent and showcasing value.<\/li>\n<li>Build landing and product pages with good UX that get people to convert.<\/li>\n<li>Create experience loops using email, social media, and other channels (because PPC doesn\u2019t exist in a vacuum).<\/li>\n<li>Troubleshooting, tweaking, and a thousand other things that AI is far from capable of doing autonomously.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Dig deeper: AI Max experiments arrive in Google Ads: Here\u2019s how they work<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"early-lessons-from-ai-max-and-what-to-do-next\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Early_lessons_from_AI_Max_and_what_to_do_next\"><\/span>Early lessons from AI Max and what to do next<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s still too soon to definitively judge AI Max, but the early signs are positive \u2013 possibly more so than they were for Performance Max.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The main things this 30+ day test taught me are:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I\u2019d love to see more reporting and analytics for AI Max, like why certain segments of users were targeted. Google is scaling back individual user-level reporting due to privacy concerns, but there\u2019s no reason we shouldn\u2019t see something beyond top-level performance.<\/li>\n<li>Since AI Max is primarily focused on the Search network and, therefore, works with the most user data, it seems to yield better-quality output than other algorithmic features. But it also doesn\u2019t spend as aggressively as I would have thought.<\/li>\n<li>The Performance Max mindset definitely helps push you in the right direction with AI Max, and while all account-level data is helpful, there\u2019s no concrete proof (yet) that getting results with one means you\u2019ll succeed with the other.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>AI Max is new and still in beta, so it will be a while before we have a product that works the way Google intended.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As always, reserve a portion of your budget for experimentation and test cautiously so that you don\u2019t overextend and find yourself having a difficult conversation with clients and bosses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
