That\u2019s according to Liz Reid, Google\u2019s head of Search, in a new The Economic Times podcast interview.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why we care<\/strong>. We\u2019re in a massive transitional period. If you believe Google, AI isn\u2019t shrinking the pie \u2013 it\u2019s expanding opportunities for brands, businesses, and creators. Perhaps AI Overviews are killing shallow traffic, but the big question remains whether Google can find ways to reward rich, engaging content.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The future of search.<\/strong> AI is a layer, not a replacement. Some quotes from Reid:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI think we\u2019re still really at the beginning. I think there\u2019s still [a] huge way to think about how we use AI to reinvent search.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWe don\u2019t view AI as replacing search \u2026 We view it as augmenting, as enabling us to reinvent search.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe goal [is] making it possible that you can ask truly anything on search and that you can do so effortlessly.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Dig deeper. Google\u2019s Liz Reid: It isn\u2019t AI or search; it\u2019s AI in search<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Blue links + human voices. Google wants to give users AI answers, as well as direct access to creators, experts, and communities.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI do think the story of the blue link is far from over.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cMany many people want to hear from other people \u2026 people want to connect with humans and that human spirit.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWeb content, short-form video, user-created content will continue to flourish.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWe\u2019re also experimenting with inline links within AI Overviews and AI Mode \u2026 linking directly to that creator so you can hear more.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>SEO in an AI-first world.<\/strong> Thin content is dead. Quality, perspective, and depth win, according to Reid:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cPeople should really produce content that users care about and not think about building content for search engines.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIf you produce content that\u2019s very shallow \u2026 then your content really doesn\u2019t have much more than like an AI Overview would give.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhat you do see is a lot of excitement on the deep clicks.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cBe optimizing for a great experience \u2026 people are going to want to go there not to just get that 5-second thing, but to actually go deeper.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Changing search behavior.<\/strong> AI lowers friction \u2013 people ask more via longer and more complex queries.
