\n\tThe good, the bad, and the ugly sides of Hollywood, Silicon Valley, and Europe were in focus in a day 2 keynote at the fifth edition of\u00a0Iberseries<\/a> & Platino Industria, in which outspoken Hollywood showrunner, screenwriter, and producer John Altschuler (Silicon Valley<\/em>) shared insights and experiences. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe studios have always hated writers. They despise writers,\u201d he argued. \u201cThe first organized union was the Writers Guild. They hate us. But what they know in Hollywood is that without a script<\/a>, you have nothing.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tThat means that Hollywood productions are writer-driven, he said, in contrast to Europe, where projects are more director-driven. \u201cThat is the biggest disconnect between America and Europe,\u201d Altschuler concluded. Bringing together the successful, proven production processes of Hollywood and Europe\u2019s appreciation for art can create something new that combines the best of both worlds, he suggested.<\/p>\n

\n\tAltschuler also shared how their middle-class backgrounds meant that he and\u00a0Beavis and Butt-Head<\/em> and King of the Hill<\/em> creator Mike Judge immedia<\/a>tely got along. \u201cIn Hollywood, they despise the middle class,\u201d he then offered.<\/p>\n

\n\tAbout his experience working on King of the Hill<\/em>, he said: \u201cI worked with Brad Pitt, Ben Stiller, Jennifer Aniston,\u201d Altschuler said, highlighting that everyone wanted to be on that show back in the day.<\/p>\n

\n\tAltschuler also recalled coming up with the idea for Silicon Valley<\/em> to put a comedic spotlight on the technology<\/a> sector and culture, which he said wasn\u2019t shown in film or TV before. \u201cThe closest was The Big Bang Theory<\/em>, a sitcom that was about geniuses, and it didn\u2019t get it right,\u201d he argued, adding that, \u201cI like big targets.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTech executives are one such big target, and he met some of them, he told the keynote event. That is why season 1 of Silicon Valley<\/em>, parodying them, keeps showing characters who say, \u201cWe don\u2019t want to make money, we just want to make the world a better place,\u201d Altschuler explained, adding: \u201cNow these really are some of the most horrible people. \u2026 They\u2019re greedy, ravenous, terrible people. So I was like, \u2018This is a show\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn terms of big picture commentary, Altschuler told the Iberseries audience that \u201cIP, intellectual property, is everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOf course, things have changed in the digital age. \u201cThe business has changed dramatically,\u201d he offered. And he shared that he is developing, as an Irish-U.K. co-production, a series based on The Gangster\u2019s Guide to Sobriety: My Life in 12 Steps<\/em>, a book he co-wrote with Dave Krinsky and Richie Stephens.<\/p>\n

The first day of Iberseries had included appearances by executives from the likes of\u00a0Disney+ Spain, the\u00a0studio Gaumont, independent\u00a0production powerhouse Banijay, and Telemundo Studios, with a late session starring Argentinian actress-turned-producer Luisana Lopilato, which was attended by her husband Michael Bubl\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
