\n CNN president Jeff Zucker told Michael Cohen in 2016 that he wanted Donald Trump, whom he referred to as \u201cthe boss,\u201d to host a weekly show, while touting the importance of having the favor of the network to win the White House.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou guys have had great instincts, great guts and great understanding of everything. But you\u2019re missing the boat on how it works going forward,\u201d the CNN boss told Cohen during the March 2016 conversation revealed in a recording played on Tucker Carlson\u2019s Fox News show<\/a>\u00a0Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Zucker, who worked with Trump as the former CEO of NBC Universal while \u201cThe App<\/a>rentice\u201d was on the network, told Cohen: \u201cYou cannot be elected president of the United States without CNN.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zucker also pitched a project for Trump, who was at the time beginning to pull away from the pack of GOP hopefuls during the Republican primary.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have all these proposals for him,\u201d\u2018 Zucker told Cohen. \u201cI want to do a weekly show with him and all this stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

The conversation took place before a GOP primary debate on March 10 that was going to air on CNN, and Zucker gave Cohen some advice for candidate Trump about how to deal with expected attacks from challengers that he is a \u201cconman.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know what you should do? Whoever\u2019s around him today should just be calling him a conman all day so he\u2019s used to it, so that when he hears it from [Sen. Marco] Rubio, it doesn\u2019t matter,\u201d Zucker said. \u201c\u2018Hey, conman, hey conman, hey conman.\u2019 He thinks that\u2019s his name, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n

Zucker also expressed concerns about contacting \u201cthe boss,\u201d Trump, by email, fearing the chance that he might mention the conversations at a campaign rally.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very conscious of not putting too much in email, as you\u2019re a lawyer, as you understand,\u201d Zucker told him. \u201cAnd, you know, as fond as I am of the boss, he also has a tendency, like, you know, if I call him or I email him, he then is capable of going out at his next rally and saying that we just talked and I can\u2019t have that, if you know what I\u2019m saying.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not that I don\u2019t want to talk to [Trump] every day. I\u2019ve just got to be careful, because, I\u2019ve just got to be careful \u2026 I just don\u2019t want him talking about it on the campaign trail \u2026 But you know what? I\u2019m going to give him a call right now and I\u2019m going to wish him luck in the debate tonight,\u201d he continued.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
