Now it seems he&#8217;s warming up to them as OpenAI builds the tech to power ChatGPT\u2019s future ad business.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"bialty-container\">\n<p>Sam Altman once said advertising was a \u201clast resort\u201d for ChatGPT. Now he seems to think that \u201cmaybe ads don\u2019t always suck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Altman is saying.<\/strong> In a new <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stratechery.com\/2025\/an-interview-with-openai-ceo-sam-altman-about-devday-and-the-ai-buildout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stratechery<\/a> interview, Altman admitted Instagram changed his mind about ads:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI love Instagram ads, they\u2019ve added value to me, I found stuff I never would\u2019ve found, I bought a bunch of stuff, I actively like Instagram ads. I think there\u2019s many things I respect about Meta, but getting that so right was a surprisingly cool thing for me. Other than that, I viewed ads on the Internet as sort of like a tax.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI believe there probably is some cool ad product we can do that is a net win to the user and a sort of positive to our relationship with the user. I don\u2019t know what it is yet, I\u2019m not like, \u2018Here is our ad model\u2019 already.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What Altman used to say.<\/strong> Altman dismissed ads in 2024 as \u201ca momentary industry.\u201d He also said:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI kind of hate ads as an aesthetic choice \u2026 I like that people pay for ChatGPT and know the answers they\u2019re getting are not influenced by advertisers.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At Harvard, he called ads a \u201clast resort\u201d and said \u201cads-plus-AI is sort of uniquely unsettling to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stratechery.com\/2025\/an-interview-with-openai-ceo-sam-altman-about-building-a-consumer-tech-company\/\">March interview<\/a>, Altman once again dismissed \u201ctraditional ads\u201d and shared his vision for an ads product:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cThe kind of thing I\u2019d be much more excited to try than traditional ads is a lot of people use Deep Research for ecommerce, for example, and is there a way that we could come up with some sort of new model, which is we\u2019re never going to take money to change placement or whatever, but if you buy something through Deep Research that you found, we\u2019re going to charge like a 2% affiliate fee or something. That would be cool, I\u2019d have no problem with that. And maybe there\u2019s a tasteful way we can do ads, but I don\u2019t know. I kind of just don\u2019t like ads that much.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI\u2019m not going to say what we will and will never do because I don\u2019t know, but I think there\u2019s a lot of interesting ways that are higher on our list of monetization strategies than ads right now.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Then something changed.<\/strong> By mid-2025, the tone started softening.<\/p>\n<p>On <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DB9mjd-65gw&amp;t=982s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenAI\u2019s own podcast<\/a>, Altman said:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cWe haven\u2019t done any advertising product yet. I\u2019m not totally against it \u2026 I like ads on Instagram. \u2026 It\u2019d take a lot of care to get right.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cGoogle Search was an amazing product for a long time. It does feel to me like it\u2019s degraded. \u2026 There was a time where there were lots of ads, but I still thought it was the best thing on the Internet. I mean, I love Google search. \u2026 It\u2019s clearly possible to be a good ad-driven company, but \u2026 there are obviously issues, too.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And after launching ChatGPT Pulse, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/793073\/chatgpt-pulse-no-plans-for-ads-sam-altman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he told reporters<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cTo the degree we can find out cool things to do that actually seem helpful to users \u2026 maybe there\u2019s something to do there. But \u2026 we <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach ads with great caution.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why the change?<\/strong> Because OpenAI is staffing up to turn ChatGPT into an ad platform. ChatGPT is also banking on $1 billion in new revenue from \u201cfree user monetization\u201d (read: ads) in 2026, according to an internal document.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why we care. <\/strong>The launch of ChatGPT ads product would give advertisers access to a massive new paid <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> channel with 800 million users. Altman once saw ads as the internet\u2019s necessary evil. Now, he sees them as a possible feature \u2013 if done right.
