\n\tJim Caviezel will not return to play Jesus Christ for director Mel Gibson\u2018s forthcoming follow-ups to the smash hit The Passion of the Christ<\/em>, The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> has confirmed.<\/p>\n

\n\tLionsgate is set to release the two-film project The Resurrection of the Christ<\/em> theatrically in 2027, with the production aiming to begin soon in Rome. Key roles will be recast for the new movies<\/a>, as Caviezel will not reprise the titular part of Jesus, while Monica Bellucci also won\u2019t return as Mary Magdalene.<\/p>\n

\n\tTelling the story of Jesus\u2019 arrest and crucifixion, The Passion of the Christ<\/em> was a box office sensation when it hit theaters Feb. 25, 2004, surpassing $600 million globally. Until last year, the movie\u2019s $370 million box office sum in North America made it the highest-grossing R-rated title of all time domestically. Gibson\u2019s gamble to produce and self-finance the movie clearly paid off.<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter having been in the works for nearly a decade, The Resurrection of the Christ:\u00a0Part One<\/em>\u00a0hits theaters March 26, 2027, which is Good Friday. Forty days later, Part Two<\/em>\u00a0will debut May 6, 2027, in honor of Ascension Day. Gibson is producing the films with Icon Production partner Bruce Davey.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe lead role in The Passion of the Christ<\/em> has been a career-defining one for Caviezel. He is also known for starring on the CBS series Person of Interest <\/em>and in such films as Angel Eyes<\/em> and Sound of Freedom.<\/em><\/p>\n

\n\tDuring an April interview on the Arroyo Grande<\/a><\/em> podcast, Caviezel app<\/a>eared to be ready to star in Resurrection<\/em>. \u201cI want to enjoy this one more than I did the other one,\u201d Caviezel said in comparing the new project to the 2004 feature. \u201cOn the other one, I was concerned that it was not in Aramaic. I said, \u2018We\u2019re not doing this.\u2019 Well, that was a different world. But I really do trust what [Gibson] adds.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn its 2004 review of The Passion of the Christ<\/em>, THR<\/em> noted the film\u2019s \u201cnear pornographic violence\u201d and deemed it \u201ca medieval Passion Play with much better effects.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNew York Post<\/em> was first to report on the roles being recast.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
