Savenok\/Getty Images for Project Healthy Minds) \/ Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That number only\u00a0represents\u00a0the parents who have been able to link their child\u2019s harm to social media and who have the capacity to \u201cfight back against some of the wealthiest, most powerful corporations in the world,\u201d said Prince Harry.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have witnessed the explosion of unregulated artificial intelligence,\u00a0heard more and more stories from heartbroken families, and watched parents all over the world become increasingly concerned about their children\u2019s digital lives,\u201d he continued.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-techcrunch-inline-cta\">\n<div class=\"inline-cta__wrapper\">\n<p>Techcrunch event<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-cta__content\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"inline-cta__location\">San Francisco<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"inline-cta__separator\">|<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"inline-cta__date\">October 27-29, 2025<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said these families were up against corporations and lobbyists that were spending millions to suppress the truth; that algorithms were designed to \u201cmaximize data collection at any\u00a0cost,\u201d and\u00a0said\u00a0that social media was preying upon children.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, he called out <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le for its user\u00a0privacy\u00a0violations\u00a0and\u00a0Meta for saying\u00a0privacy\u00a0restrictions\u00a0would\u00a0cost them billions. He spoke about the harms of AI and what happened when researchers, posing as children,\u00a0tested out\u00a0an increasingly popular AI chatbot.\u00a0\u201cThey experienced\u00a0a harmful interaction every five minutes,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis wasn\u2019t content created by a third party,\u201d he continued. \u201cThese were the company\u2019s own chatbots working to advance their own depraved internal policies.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The big announcement of the night was that The Parents Network would partner with\u00a0ParentsTogether, another organization focused on family advocacy and online\u00a0safety, to do more work protecting children from social media.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not the first time Prince Harry, in particular, has spoken out about social media harms.\u00a0Back in April, the prince\u00a0visited youth leaders in Brooklyn\u00a0to talk to them about the rising\u00a0influence of tech platforms, which have been incentivized by profit rather than safety. In January,\u00a0he\u00a0and Meghan also\u00a0called out Meta\u00a0for undermining free speech\u00a0after the platform announced it would make changes to its fact-checking policy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The couple\u2019s thoughts about the influence of tech companies do not exist in isolation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Numerous studies have shown the negative impact social media is having on young people, creating a mental health\u00a0crisis\u00a0and fueling a loneliness epidemic.\u00a0The next day, on Friday, World Mental Health Day, Project Healthy Minds t<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.projecthealthyminds.com\/wmhd-festival-2025\">hrew a festival talk about mental health<\/a>. It was introduced by Meghan and moderated by journalist\u00a0Katie Couric.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It began with Jonathan Haidt, the author of the best-selling book\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2024\/apr\/27\/anxious-generation-jonathan-haidt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">and\u00a0controversial\u00a0book<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cThe Anxious Generation,\u201d who presented his findings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anxiety is up. Depression is up. Children are struggling in school.\u00a0More\u00a0children find their lives\u00a0to be\u00a0meaningless.\u00a0There is no more outside\u00a0playtime.\u00a0They\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0learning social cues because they\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0going outside. Boys are being led down the path to gambling addictions.\u00a0Young people\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0know how to handle conflict in real life because they\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0spending time in real life \u2014 only online.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while states are trying to pass\u00a0legislation,\u00a0it\u00a0hasn\u2019t\u00a0been without a fight \u2014\u00a0the tech lobby\u2019s are working hard.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPlay is about brain development,\u201d Haidt told Couric on the panel. \u201cWhen animals are deprived of play in early childhood, they come out much more anxious in adulthood.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is even a lessening of proper boredom\u00a0time\u00a0\u2014 those moments one spends looking out the window during a car ride or staring aimlessly ahead while waiting in a queue.
