\n Anne Frank, a 15-year-old Holocaust victim honored for her posthumously published diary recounting her family\u2019s time hiding from the Nazis in Amsterdam, wouldn\u2019t normally be associated with beauty products. But this week, a Hong Kong makeup brand attached her name to a liquid blush \u2014 and faced the ire of critics who slammed the act on social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The brand, called Woke Up Like This (WULT), received a glowing write-up in Time Out Hong Kong on Wednesday for the \u201cFace Dab\u201d collection of liquid blushes to ring in the brand\u2019s first anniversary.<\/p>\n

The article has since been taken down from the site, but US-based Jewish news<\/a>paper Algemeiner noted<\/a> the beauty-product line \u201caims to promote Sexual Health Awareness Month by naming the products after inspiring, famous women in hopes to inspire WULT customers to live their dreams and break through gender barriers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDream Like Anne,\u201d no longer available for purchase<\/a> on the brand\u2019s website, joined four other pastel-tone shades in the collection<\/a>. Other names for the line included \u201cLike Like Melinda\u201d for philanthropist Melinda Gates, \u201cIn Woolf\u2019s Words\u201d for writer Virginia Woolf and \u201cViva La Frida\u201d for artist Frida Kahlo.<\/p>\n

\u201cDream Like Anne\u201d retailed for about $38.50.<\/p>\n

Ben M. Freeman, a Jewish author, was among the first to take to Twitter.<\/p>\n

\u201cNaming a shade of blush after Anne Frank, who was a victim of genocide is revolting,\u201d he tweeted<\/a>. \u201cDead Jews are not a marketing opportunity. [Time Out Hong Kong], shame on you for not noticing and for promoting this disrespect.\u201d<\/p>\n

His tweet drew 109 retweets and several dozen comments, some of which included<\/a>, \u201cThis is marketing at its worst\u201d and \u201cYeah, Anne Frank really lived her dreams,\u201d followed by a screaming-face emoji<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In turn, Time Out offered a lengthy editor\u2019s note to the top of the article while it remained live on the website \u2014 a statement longer than the article itself, which still included the Anne Frank mention.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe understand and recognize the insensitivities within this article, and that the inclusion of this product came across as disrespectful of Anne Frank and what she represents,\u201d it read. \u201cWe sincerely apologize for the distress that this piece has caused.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hong Kong-based CNN Travel<\/a> editor Lilit Marcus also tweeted<\/a> about the correction, and added in the comments that \u201cthey published it on Erev Rosh Hashanah,\u201d meaning the day before the Jewish new year, which begins Friday evening.<\/p>\n

WULT issued an apology in response to the backlash.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo those who were offended by the naming of Face Dab \u2014 Dream Like Anne, we sincerely apologize for the miscommunication and misunderstanding this has caused,\u201d the statement said. \u201cWe have the greatest respect for Ms Anne Frank, and it was never our intention to be insulting, offensive, or to reap profits from naming the product after a historical figure whose life was tragically cut short by events that bring out the worst of mankind.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
