He\u2019s worked with free-jazz legend <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/sonny-sharrock-guitarist-summer-of-soul-1189260\/\">Sonny Sharrock<\/a>, no-wave pioneer <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/artolindsay\/?hl=en\">Arto Lindsay<\/a>, and tropic\u00e1lia deity <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.elbphilharmonie.de\/en\/mediatheque\/caetano-veloso-brazils-voice-of-the-century\/598\">Caetano Veloso<\/a>, and is a founding member of freak-funk trio <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=g653DTiR7Qw\">Harriet Tubman<\/a> and cosmic jam band <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/bodymetaband.bandcamp.com\/\">Body Me\u03c0a<\/a>. In his solo work, he\u2019s just as hard to pin down, and his new record <i>Amasia: Anamibia Sessions 2<\/i> is a case in point.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            When coming into the second part of a \u201csessions\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a>, one <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly expects to hear familiar sounds or <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theme<\/a>s from the first. But where <i>Anamibia Sessions 1: The Wave<\/i> is a freeform, largely atonal suite, all locked grooves and static, <i>Amasia<\/i> could conceivably be called a beats tape.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Here, Gibbs draws inspiration from Miles Davis and Teo Macero\u2019s production on Davis\u2019 pioneering fusion albums, especially his 1975 LP <i>Agharta<\/i>, to create knotty but clearly enunciated instrumentals, slow-cooked sonic stews in which every ingredient retains its taste. Opener, \u201cFelonious Monk,\u201dsees Onaje Allan Gumbs\u2019 electric piano slinking across Gibbs\u2019 angular trap drum programming and warped sound effects from a bombed-out metropolis of 2000s blockbuster rap production. \u201cGullah Style Jack\u201d then takes us back to hip-hop\u2019s jazz-funk golden age, where Pete Cosey\u2019s caterwalling guitar provides some \u201970s stank while Gumbs and Napoleon Maddox \u2014 whose inspired beatboxing syncopates four of the project\u2019s six tracks \u2014 give it that slick turn-of-the-\u201990s feel until the whole thing accelerates to into hyperdrive near the end.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            Tracks from the album\u2019s more experimental back half find Gibbs back in his experimental bag, emphasizing celestial sound design over rhythmic cohesion. But closer \u201cO.G. Dreams of Lost Love,\u201d while perhaps a bit too drifting to freestyle over, brings us slowly back to Earth, Maddox\u2019s mouth noises scratching against Gibbs\u2019 bass to provide the sense of a firm ground.
