At the start of the year, Zohran Mamdani had been an unfamiliar yet inviting face popping up on Instagram and TikTok feeds across the five boroughs. Gradually, and then suddenly, he was everywhere. At the end of May, I picked up two blue and yellow Zohran for New York City posters in Union Square. An older man sitting on a tree guard near 13th Street saw me carrying them and said, \u201cThis guy \u2014 can he really freeze the rent? Make the buses free? I don\u2019t know.\u201d My mom, who was with me, replied, \u201cWell, he\u2019s going to try.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            When Mamdani <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/07\/01\/nyregion\/mamdani-wins-mayor-primary-nyc.html\">won the primary<\/a> on July 24 the city felt electric. It turned out my transplant friends, who I\u2019d been urging to change their registration since before November \u201824, had actually voted in the New York mayoral race. This seemed monumental. Brown and Dore-Young \u2014 who first met at Palisades, a beloved Bushwick venue that closed in 2016, a decade ago \u2014 have witnessed profound changes in the city\u2019s art scene. Not only Palisades, but The Glove, Shea Stadium, Silent Barn, Death By Audio, Glasslands, Secret Project Robot, and various other consequential N.Y.C community music venues have closed, while rent and grocery prices skyrocketed. Brown and Dore-Young are among a sizable group of N.Y.C.-based musicians and artists who are seeing Mamdani as someone who will revitalize the scene once more \u2014 or at least, are hopeful he\u2019ll make it easier for there to be one.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cI think probably like 90% of the money I&#8217;ve ever made in my life has gone to rent,\u201d Brown tells me over the phone, on break from a long Water From Your Eyes tour. The most exciting thing about Mamdani\u2019s platform, they say, is its roots in making life easier for people. \u201cAn affordable New York would be so awesome.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-275158\" class=\"content_block until learning of Mandani\u2019s campaign, they hadn\u2019t been excited politically since Bernie Sanders. But Mamdani\u2019s affordability platform, and the way he seemed to be genuinely concerned about the lives of New Yorkers, fueled their fire once again. \u201cIt&#8217;s not like he has a bunch of big donors that he&#8217;s making promises to,\u201d Brown adds. \u201cThe promises he&#8217;s making are to the people who actually live here.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            For the Brooklyn-raised Dore-Young, who\u2019s been a critical force in New York DIY for years and has experience organizing DSA benefits, the shows were a way to express that excitement, and to \u201chelp connect people with each other, galvanize.\u201d The four benefit shows, from August 24th to September 3rd, were held at Union Pool, Honey\u2019s, TV Eye, and Nightclub 101 (where, notably, another <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.readfeedme.com\/p\/the-hottest-party-in-new-york-this\">artist-studded fundraising event<\/a> was held in March). They passed out voter registration and volunteer forms, and the bills featured local and out-of-state artists like Christian Lee Hutson, Katy Kirby, Palehound, Wild Pink, and Gift, with support from After three out of four sold-out shows, all proceeds went to on-the-ground organizations the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/thesameerproject\/?hl=en\">Sameer Project<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/nycmigrantsolidarity\/?hl=en\">NYC Migrant Solidarity<\/a>, as well as the Mamdani support PAC <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/supportzohran.com\/\">New Yorkers for Lower Costs<\/a>. It was in the effort, as Dore-Young puts it, of \u201cdoing something for the greater movement that this campaign represents.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            The shows mobilized other segments of N.Y.C.\u2019s artistic community. Kristine Michelsen Correa, a creative director who led the tabling charge and hawked black-metal font <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/itsgivingprizes\/?hl=en\">Zohran hats<\/a> at the events, told me that she\u2019s sold over 500 hats in five weeks. That the hats have proliferated mostly due to word-of-mouth and one-on-one interaction is \u201can amazing example of how people can connect over an important moment in our political history in New York.\u201d Her involvement in the music aspect of it all, which began with the indie rock benefit shows, came about the same way: noticing \u201ca lot of musicians using their voice\u201d in support of Mamdani. Most recently, Michelsen Correa sold hats at musician Fenne Lily\u2019s show at Nightclub 101 after the singer\u2019s partner had seen the hats on the subway.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cThe Zohran Effect is so strong,\u201d Lily says. Though the British native can\u2019t vote in New York, she felt drawn to being involved in some way, if only because she\u2019s experienced how the quality of live music has declined since COVID, she says. \u201cVenues shut down, the cost of living went up, streaming is a nightmare, Spotify is run by the worst guy ever. But then Zohran came along and it was like, <i>Someone has practical, kind ways to make the future not a scary place.<\/i>\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; mostly, he\u2019s made comments about the intrinsic link between economics and art-making, and his belief in the value of arts accessibility. When he was endorsed by musicians union AFM Local 802 in July, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/1290379219432073\">he said<\/a>, \u201cArt can&#8217;t just be a luxury for the few. That requires a city where artists can actually afford their rent, groceries, childcare and transit.\u201d (Notably, he\u2019s the son of filmmaker Mira Nair, and lived a previous life as a rapper.)\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            The closest he\u2019s gotten to an official policy statement was at BRIC\u2019s Arts &amp; Culture Mayoral Forum in February, where <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DF-lAPjOeXO\/\">he said<\/a>, as mayor, he\u2019s committed to \u201cunderstanding art beyond simply tourism, beyond the fiscal impacts,\u201d and that he would bring an administration that values art-based community organizations as much as their religious counterparts. But this was enough to gain the faith of artist Salman Toor, model and activist Bethann Hardison, and Zoe Salda\u00f1a, who all commented on the post. And Mamdani has since also been endorsed <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/actorsequity.org\/news\/PR\/2025\/07\/28\/actors-equity-association-endorses-zohran-mamdani-for-new-york-city-mayor\">by the Actors\u2019 Equity Association<\/a>, and called \u201cthe Downtown Scene\u2019s pick for New York City Mayor\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/market\/zohran-mamdani-anne-imhof-wet-paint-2616465\">by ArtNet<\/a>.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Dore-Young acknowledges that Mamdani\u2019s election won\u2019t bring solutions for all the problems that ail the city\u2019s arts scene, but \u201cI think [his election] is an extremely necessary first step for our survival. For native New Yorkers who have stuck it out here, they&#8217;re struggling and they think about how they might have to leave. It seems like this guy wants to help us. But probably most people at the MJ Lenderman show, at the indie rock benefit shows, at the Fenne Lily show, at Rash Bar last week, etcetera, were likely to vote for Mamdani anyway. What feels different, special, rare, is how his messaging has resonated beyond the local community. This summer alone, Mamdani\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Au92kgPlGnM\">surprised<\/a> Lucy Dacus\u2019s audience at All Things Go, went to Madison Square Garden for <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DMghy-pu861\">Wu-Tang Clan<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DLiDMHTxgLk\/\">pulled up<\/a> to BAYO Festival at Barclays, and held a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DJ9eSlaON_j\/?hl=en\">Trans Community Town Hall<\/a> with Ceyenne Doroshow at Ridgewood dance hub Nowadays. There was a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DOtt-cogPMK\/\">Rave 4 Zohran<\/a> at Market Hotel, a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DJFtUd1vWSu\/?hl=en\">Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll and Rent Control<\/a> at Xanadu, and a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DPo5tlkEali\/?hl=en\">Change Becomes Us<\/a> benefit at Hyperballad.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            Somehow, it doesn\u2019t feel dumb to be, earnestly, hopeful\u2014 and in a city renowned for its attitude and notoriously bad mayors, no less. Voter turnout for <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nycvotes.org\/news-and-press\/articles\/2025-primary-election-turnout-soars\/\">the primary was the highest it\u2019s been in over<\/a> a decade.\u201cEven people who don&#8217;t believe in voting are like, \u2018Okay, this guy is talking about protecting trans people. He&#8217;s talking about protecting immigrants.
