unusual drops in Google Search Console (GSC) data.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Impressions were down, average positions shifted, and the number of reported queries changed overnight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This wasn\u2019t the result of a ranking update but a reporting change \u2013 one that redefines how we interpret GSC visibility data going forward.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-happened-to-gsc-impressions\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_happened_to_GSC_impressions\"><\/span>What happened to GSC impressions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The drop traces back to Google\u2019s quiet decision to stop supporting the <code>&amp;num=100<\/code> parameter, which allowed tools and crawlers to retrieve up to 100 results per query.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Once support ended, those extra data points dis<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eared \u2013 and with them, many of the impressions and positional averages SEOs had been tracking.<\/p>\n<p>While search results themselves didn\u2019t change, GSC reporting did.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Third-party platforms lost signal beyond Positions 1\u201320, and GSC data recalibrated to reflect real user activity rather than automated crawler noise.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-this-change-makes-sense\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_this_change_makes_sense\"><\/span>Why this change makes sense<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As I\u2019ve spoken with SEOs and reviewed multiple sites, it\u2019s clear we need to reset how we interpret impressions: treat the data you see now as the new normal.<\/p>\n<p>Discontinuing support for the <code>&amp;num=100<\/code> parameter makes sense.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I saw the same principle in action at my community garage sale last weekend \u2013 fewer choices led to better results.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also easier for Google to show 10 or 20 results per search than to generate 100.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While this shift disrupted tools built on the now-unsupported parameter, it didn\u2019t affect real users.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It did, however, catch the attention of SEOs who monitor every fluctuation in how Google reports data.<\/p>\n<p>We saw no visible changes in the SERP, but Search Console told a different story:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A drop in impressions.<\/li>\n<li>Changes to average position.<\/li>\n<li>An increase in the number of queries ranking in Positions 1\u201320.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Those shifts changed how we think about GSC data.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-alligator-effect\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_alligator_effect\"><\/span>The alligator effect<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Earlier in the year, we observed another pattern \u2013 the alligator effect.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Starting around February, GSC charts showed rising impressions and steady clicks, creating a shape that resembled an open alligator\u2019s mouth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many assumed the growth was tied to AI Overviews and an increase in zero-click searches.<\/p>\n<p>When Google ended support for the <code>&amp;num=100<\/code> parameter on September 12, that alligator finally closed its mouth.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" GSC stopped supporting the <code>&amp;num=100<\/code> parameter around 9\/12\/2025 resulting in impressions generated by third-parties and automated crawlers being removed from reporting.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If impressions or average position are used in broader models or long-term trend analyses, adjustments between Feb. 1 and Sept. 12, 2025, may be appropriate.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-option-1-simple-method\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Option_1_Simple_method\"><\/span>Option 1: Simple method<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Use prior-year impressions and average position up to the start of volatility in early February.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When impressions began to rise sharply (Feb. 1\u2013Sept. 12, 2025), revert to prior-year values, then use GSC data as reported from Sept. 13 onward.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-option-2-advanced-method\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Option_2_Advanced_method\"><\/span>Option 2: Advanced method<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Rebuild historical impressions and average position using trend data and adjustment factors. Evaluate:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Differences in fluctuation by query type or ranking position (branded, non-branded, long-tail).<\/li>\n<li>Metrics such as GSC clicks, which were less correlated with impressions during the affected period.<\/li>\n<li>Other factors unaffected by impression volatility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-to-expect-from-gsc-going-forward\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_to_expect_from_GSC_going_forward\"><\/span>What to expect from GSC going forward<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Treat the post-change figures as the new baseline. The numbers you see now reflect how GSC will report visibility from here on.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Impressions will stabilize at lower levels compared with earlier 2025 trends.<\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/7042828?hl=en#position\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Average position<\/a> will level out, since it\u2019s calculated relative to impressions.<\/li>\n<li>The number of unique queries reported in Positions 1\u201320 will hold steady. With less long-tail data, GSC will show more queries ranking in those positions.<\/li>\n<li>Clicks and traffic should remain consistent, confirming that user engagement with your listings hasn\u2019t changed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"why-impressions-and-average-position-still-matter\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_impressions_and_average_position_still_matter\"><\/span>Why impressions and average position still matter<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Even with the recalibration, impressions and average position are still key indicators of visibility and progress \u2013 just measured more accurately than before.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Consistency:<\/strong> GSC metrics now reflect real search activity instead of automated crawler data, making them more reliable for SEO measurement.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Visibility tracking:<\/strong> Still useful for identifying when optimizations begin to take effect.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stability:<\/strong> Data for keywords ranking in the top 20 positions show steadier trends than long-tail terms, since positions beyond 20 are no longer captured.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"a-clearer-baseline-for-visibility\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_clearer_baseline_for_visibility\"><\/span>A clearer baseline for visibility<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The impression and average position levels you see now in GSC represent a more accurate view of real user search activity. Treat these as your baseline for reporting.<\/p>\n<p>If impressions or average position are used in models or performance controls, normalization methods can adjust historical data. But in most cases, it\u2019s best to move forward with current figures as-is.<\/p>\n<p>Google simply made fewer results available.
