Today, we\u2019re watching a video that explores the re-casting of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Stanley Kubrick\u2019s Full Metal Jacket.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>Whenever I think about directors who traumatize their actors for the sake of eliciting a performance, I think about the apocryphal comment of Sr. Laurence Olivier, who, after witnessing the self-destructive method acting of Dustin Hoffman during the shoot for <em>Marathon Man<\/em>, is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/23STBLtvehM\">said to have remarked<\/a>, \u201cMy dear boy, why don\u2019t you try ACTING? It\u2019s so much easier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is, of course, a big difference between method actors and \u201cmethod directors.\u201d Namely, that the latter careens dangerously into the uncomfortable territory of a workplace violation. From William Friedkin sl<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ing a priest on the set of <em>The Exorcist <\/em>to Francis Ford Coppola assuming the role of a maniacal dictator on <em>Apocalypse Now<\/em>, some directors play mind <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s in the interest of getting what they want.<\/p>\n<p>There is, perhaps, no better example of this than <strong>Stanley Kubrick<\/strong>, a director famous for playing 3-D chess with actors in an effort to tease out intense displays of distress, suspicion, and paralyzing fear. He pushed <strong>Shelley Duvall<\/strong> over the edge on the set of <strong><em>The Shining<\/em><\/strong> to the point that her hair fell out. He forbid <strong>Tom Cruise<\/strong> from any knowledge of then-wife Nicole Kidman\u2019s extramarital love scene in <em><strong>Eyes Wide Shut<\/strong>.<\/em> The anecdotes abound.<\/p>\n<p>But, as the following video essay argues, one of the most brutal things Kubrick has ever done to an actor was the abrupt re-casting of <strong><em>Full Metal Jacket<\/em><\/strong>\u2018s Gunnery Sergeant Hartman. The role of the foul-mouthed Sergeant originally belonged to <strong>Tim Colceri<\/strong>. But there was a hiccup. Namely: the conviction of <strong>R. Lee Ermey<\/strong> that he was a better fit. Colceri lost the battle \u2014 and was re-cast as the unnervingly enthusiastic door gunner.
