margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-275322\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            After hopping a turnstile on his way to a Manhattan gig in 1998, punk-turned-jazz drummer <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ryans_riddim\/?hl=en\">Ryan Sawyer<\/a> was <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roached by a pretty young woman in a miniskirt and halter top. \u201cShe and her partner were these weird <i>21 Jump Street<\/i> undercover cops,\u201d he says. In his haste to make it to the show on time, he\u2019d left his wallet at home, and the officers told him they\u2019d have to bring him in if he couldn\u2019t provide proof of his identity.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            \u201cI was dumbly searching through my cymbal bag, as if my ID would be in there for some reason, hoping they\u2019d get distracted or lose interest,\u201d Sawyer says. \u201cThen, in the bottom of the bag, I found a flyer I\u2019d made for a show I\u2019d done. It was pretty abstract with all this typewriter art on it, but I had put the instruments next to everyone\u2019s names because it was jazz. So I pulled it out and said, \u2018Look! Ryan Sawyer \u2014 drums! Look! These are my cymbals! These are what drummers have!\u2019 They were like, \u2018Yeah, all right, dude. Just get away from us.\u2019 The flyer saved my ass.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-275324\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Coming up in the San Antonio\/Austin DIY punk scene in the early \u201990s, Sawyer saw flyers everywhere. Following in the footsteps of local punk heroes like the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Big_Boys_(band)\">Big Boys<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/artist\/262965-Dicks?srsltid=AfmBOorzO6yuCAFGAuF3SRkSzG04p8e6YEJrE5eFocl5kHnvUeboBfAZ\">the Dicks<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.touchandgorecords.com\/bands\/band.php?id=66\">Scratch Acid<\/a>, and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/artist\/375286-Fearless-Iranians-From-Hell?srsltid=AfmBOorivxbDsBUcdv_0t4u95scpaisyCrlRObn1RB-JophtXRT5toaa\">Fearless Iranians from Hell<\/a>, he and his friends would print their flyers at Kinkos \u2014 where everyone always knew someone on the graveyard shift who\u2019d hook them up with free 8.5\u201d X 11\u201d paper \u2014 and tape them up at every bar, club, coffee shop, record store, and telephone pole in town. \u201cFlyers were the deal,\u201d he says. \u201cEveryone did it.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            Sawyer stopped flyering in the mid 2000s; early <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> sites provided an easier alternative, and he was going out on tour a lot. But the next generation was still at it. \u201cWhen I was growing up, I learned about a lot of shows via MySpace bulletins, LiveJournal communities, and friends, but getting handed flyers while waiting in line for shows or leaving shows was also big,&#8221; says New York DIY lifer and author <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/lizpelly\/?hl=en\">Liz Pelly<\/a>. \u201cWhen I started getting more seriously involved in booking in the early 2010s, the main way to promote shows was Facebook event pages, which always felt like such a chore. Making flyers and bringing them to shows and local coffee shops and venues felt more fun and real.&#8221;\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div Sure, bands still tack flyers to the bulletin boards of local caf\u00e9s and slap stickers on the bathroom walls of your favorite dives. More and more, though, these are simply dressed-up QR codes designed to get you to an artist\u2019s streaming and social media pages. The promise of global reach and the allure of algorithmically targeted audiences make social media marketing difficult to resist.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Time is the top concern for most independent musicians I talk to about the prospect of promoting themselves offline. paint.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Sattar\u2019s ingenious wig-work may have been accomplished cheaply, but it was part of a much larger promo push, with artful images of Roan mounted and wheatpasted on strategically scouted surfaces in New York and beyond. Needless to say, very few independent artists have the budget for a creative director at all, much less one of Sattar or Strauss\u2019s stature.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-275328\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            \u201cGuerrilla marketing\u201d is one of those late-capitalist phrases that deftly twists a word synonymous with revolutionary politics into adspeak, and most DIY artists probably wouldn\u2019t admit to engaging in it. But even the most militantly punk and experimental acts to achieve a modicum of monetary success have done so, in part, through branding. Sawyer remembers seeing the teeth from Swans\u2019 <i><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/swans.bandcamp.com\/album\/filth-deluxe-remastered-2015\">Filth<\/a><\/i> cover and Einst\u00fcrzende Neubauten\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nuclearwasteunderground.com\/einsturzende-neubauten-logo-4x4-printed-patch\/?srsltid=AfmBOop05Ywr8xQjst20u4_xY3VQUhZVqC5Xmd7CtHJyx46ULEPGe_xV\">stick-figure symbol<\/a>, for instance, as vividly as he does the logos of the post-fame Sex Pistols and Ramones back in his San Antonio days. If one plans to survive as a musician without a separate full-time job, generational wealth, or a billionaire benefactor, one must ask oneself: Would Black Flag be the household name it is today without its <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/logos-world.net\/black-flag-logo\/\">famous four-bar banner<\/a>?\n          <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<hr><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-275329\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Sawyer started flyering again when the COVID pandemic began to subside. \u201cI wanted to get away from the phone,\u201d he says. \u201cThere was so much doomscrolling, and I felt like it was brainwashing me and seeping in through the edges of it all.\u201d Back in the day, he worked with painstaking precision, writing with stencils and copying graphics from architecture and magic books. Now, as a full-time musician playing roughly 15 shows a month, he doesn\u2019t have the luxury of time, so he pumps his flyers out in bulk \u2014 marked with minimalist drawings of cute cats and fast-scribbled but cleanly presented information.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            His distribution approach has changed too. Rather than affix his flyers to inanimate objects, he hands them out at shows. She suggests using templates from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/lva-virginia.libguides.com\/c.php?g=1332410&amp;p=9813606\">online archives<\/a> as guides to create custom zines and risograph printing to make the graphics pop off of the page. For the pop stars Sattar works with, an effective flyer is one that subverts notions of the depicted artist. \u201cIt\u2019s something that makes you do a double take,\u201d she says. \u201cMaybe it doesn&#8217;t stand out visually as crazy, but then you look back, and you&#8217;re like, \u2018Wait, is this for <i>that artist<\/i>?!\u2019\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Sawyer\u2019s flyering strategy within New York City is designed to build a fraction of the awareness for DIY acts that a star like Chappell Roan enjoys worldwide. \u201cI\u2019m going for an aggregate resonance that\u2019s twofold,\u201d he says. \u201cOne is that the flyers are identifiably crude and\/or gestural, so they become the branding, and it\u2019s iconic. It&#8217;s hard to deny that my handwriting is terrible and my cats are crudely drawn, so when you see that, you&#8217;re like, \u2018Oh, that&#8217;s a Ryan show!\u2019\u201d I can attest to this resonance; I knew Sawyer by flyer long before we met in earnest.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-275367\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>It\u2019s something that makes you do a double take. The odds of an offline ad reaching someone who\u2019ll respond to it are far less predictable, but physical promotion offers a democratic advantage.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cAs the platform era played out and everything became more algorithmic, hyper-personalized, and insidious, flyering started feeling more crucial,\u201d says Pelly, whose new book <i><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/Mood-Machine\/Liz-Pelly\/9781668083505\">Mood Machine<\/a><\/i> is a headlong dive into the hellhole of Spotify algorithms and whose current band is called <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/privacyissues.bandcamp.com\/\">Privacy Issues<\/a>. \u201cThere\u2019s so much to be said about the value of having a flyer hanging in a public space.
