For this year\u2019s Halloween illustration, the Gundam franchise has decided to get witchy with an artwork that depicts the characters Suletta Mercury, Gigi Andalucia, and Shiiko Sugai dressed up with pointy hats.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shiiko is the newest of the franchise\u2019s \u201cwitches.\u201d A focal character in one episode of this year\u2019s Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX<\/em>, she\u2019s a former Federation ace pilot who gained the moniker \u201cThe Witch\u201d as a result of her exploits during the war with Zeon. Anime<\/a> Trending had the chance to ask director\u00a0Kazuya Tsurumaki\u00a0<\/strong>and series<\/a> composer Yoji Enokido\u00a0<\/strong>about Shiiko\u2019s creation at Anime Expo.<\/span><\/p>\n

Suletta is the protagonist of the 2022-2023 Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury <\/em>TV series. My memory of the lore is a bit foggy, but after taking a quick peek at one particular scene and the title of one episode, \u201cwitches\u201d in the show\u2019s Ad Stella timeline seems to refer both to those involved with the development of the GUND format \u2014 originally a medical technology<\/a> meant to counter the effects of space on humans that was adopted for military mobile suits \u2014 and the pilots who can interface with it without issues.<\/span><\/p>\n

As for Gigi\u2019s witch connection, the shallow answer that comes easily to me is the second Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway<\/em> movie\u2019s Japanese subtitle, Circe no Majo<\/em> (the official English version is The Sorcery of Nymph Circe<\/em>, substituting \u201cmajo<\/em>\u201c[witch] for \u201cnymph\u201d). It\u2019s been a while since the first Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway\u00a0<\/em>movie and even longer since I read about Ulysses\u2019 encounter with the Circe of Greek mythology, but it would seem that Gigi has a more intricate connection to the word than the other characters.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Sorcery of Nymph Circe<\/em> is set to open in Japan across 363 locations on January 30, 2026 JST. A North America theatrical release is also planned, though there\u2019s no word yet on whether it\u2019ll be shown in theaters in other countries, or whether it\u2019ll be on Netflix like its predecessor. In the meantime, I suppose I\u2019ll use Christopher Nolan\u2019s The Odyssey\u00a0<\/i>to give me a refresher about Circe when it comes out.<\/span><\/p>\n
