Credit: Ryan Allen \/ Second Bay Studios Image source link: https:\/\/ieeexplore.ieee.org\/document\/11146563<br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Nonlinear optical dynamics\u2014intensity-dependent response of light upon interaction with materials under high-intensity light sources\u2014are of huge significance in modern photonics, finding <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lications in fields ranging from lasers, amplifiers, modulators, and sensors to the study of topics including quantum optics, nonlinear system dynamics, as well as light-matter interactions.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, nonlinear optical effects such as Kerr and electro-optic effects have found use in microresonator-based optical frequency combs, or &#8220;microcombs.&#8221; These compact and chip-integrated devices produce a spectrum of equidistant line using a monochromatic laser source, paving the way for advancements in frequency metrology, signal processing, optical computing, and telecommunications.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, researchers have made significant strides in the understanding of the interactions of free electrons with light in electron microscopy. They have achieved remarkable control in manipulating electrons with light and generating light from electrons, potentially facilitating advanced electron microscopy and spectroscopy, electron beam shaping, coherent modulation and probing, dielectric laser acceleration, attosecond electron bunching, and electron-driven light sources.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, photonic structures can help <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te the interactions between free electrons and light, and nanostructured metallic interfaces and plasmonic nanoparticles enable electron-photon interactions through surface plasmon polaritons.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, chip-based optical microresonators with a high-quality factor (Q) have led to further exploration of electron-photon interactions. However, these demonstrations mainly leverage the linear cavity response, overlooking the rich nonlinear optical dynamics of high-Q microresonators.<\/p>\n<p>In a review article, an international team of researchers, led by Dr. Yujia Yang and Prof. Tobias J. Kippenberg, both from Swiss Federal Institute of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Technology<\/a> Lausanne, Switzerland, and Prof. Claus Ropers from Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a>s, Germany, have comprehensively summarized the advancements in electron-photon interactions in electron microscopes in 2024, with a focus on their breakthrough work on coupling free electrons with nonlinear optical states in integrated photonic microresonators. Their study was published in the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1109\/JPHOT.2025.3604853\" target=\"_blank\"><i>IEEE Photonics Journal<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We coupled free-electron beams in a transmission electron microscope with diverse spatiotemporal optical waveforms associated with coherent or incoherent microcombs synthesized by optical parametric oscillations. In particular, we demonstrated ultrafast electron-beam modulation by chip-based femtosecond temporal solitons inside the microresonator,&#8221; highlights Dr. Yang.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the researchers summarize other highly promising recent advances made in 2024, such as attosecond electron microscopy via free electron homodyne detection, probing polariton wavepackets with free electron resonant interferometry, generation and characterization of chiral electron coils, as well as the ultrafast Kapitza-Dirac effect.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Various such emerging photonic technologies offer innovative approaches for coupling free electrons with light.
